what do you store your 22 ammo in? just need a space saver idea or two. always keep them in their original boxes here but is getting bulky and not convenient. plastic jugs okay or would you worry about condensation??

5000 come in a case. The cases stack well. I have some in original boxes in ammo cans too. Easy to move and air tight. In the PU i carry a 28 oz plastic peanut butter jar. I fill it with loose shells and shot out of it until I feel I better dump in another brick.
How many do you have that they are becoming bulky?

Twice in my life I have bought 100 cases of shotgun shells. That makes a stack. You must need more room if 22 shells are a problem. They are small. 500 22 shells will fit in a area smaller than it takes to fit 75 shotgun shells. By them by the case and leave them in the case. Do you think the factory puts them in there to take up more room. If you don't like that dump them loose in five gallon buckets.

I've noticed that 22 shells don't seem to be nearly as waterproof as when I was a kid.
Is it just my imagination?

What makes you say they are not water proof? Some brands are known for mis fires when they are fresh. Pull the bullet and if the powder is dry it is a priming problem.

^^^^^^
"Some brands are known for mis fires"??
I don't remember that either; I'm talking about back in the 70's.
I notice a lot of duds now, I just assumed it is from shells being in damp pants pockets. That didn't used to happen.
Where I live I've had damp pants pockets and wet boots my entire life.

dry dry dry

vac pack , or ammo cans

discant

remember they are not air tight cases like most center cartridges run a 9mm through the wash and 99% of the time or better bang run a 22lr through the wash well I wouldn't bet my life on it but 0.1% maybe it might go bang

Speaking of squirrel calls. grin

Would putting the shells in a mason jar with oxygen absorbers work?

I've put .22 bricks into ammo cans without any desiccant. Stored in a dry cool area away from light. Pulled them out 10 years later , they looked just like the day I put them in there. Not even any discoloration to the packaging.
They were good ammo cans (like new) with good seals. No problems , brass still shiny , lead not oxidized in the slightest. Shot fine.

Same here. I used to write the date of purchase on ammo boxes so i always used the oldest in the box when i needed a new box in the truck. Im currently shooting some 17hmr dated feb 09. Look and function like i bought them today. Been stored in ammo cans with a rubber seal. No dessicant.

I'm not even sure how old mine was , I know for a fact it was at least 10 years ago , maybe more. I bought it when I was visiting Florida and it was on sale at K mart. Still has the price tags of $8.80 a brick. The only reason I said it was 10 years old is I know it has been longer than that the last time I went to Florida , could even be 15 years old , not sure. I wish I had dated it like you do , Possum Man.
Keeping things away from moisture , UV and oxygen does wonders.

I also believe i get more duds from newer manufactured rimfire than I did when i was a kid 20 years ago. I dont have numbers but when i got my new ruger mark 4 i shot a bunch of brand new ammo from it and got misfire from all sorts of brands even everyones beloved CCI. I am currently using federal auto match as i have had the best luck with cycling and fewest duds and decent accuracy. I still get duds from those though. Pistol is striking fine so it isnt a weapon malfunction i just do believe its a quality issue these days. I dont remember any but the most rarest of occasions of duds from old ammo I used to shoot back in the day and most of those i got off the top of the dryer where my granddad emptied his pockets. That old man always had a few 22 bullets and some change in his pocket.
