Killed 20+ coyote this winter that had different levels of fur growth. Most had typical fur along the top half including neck and head. followed by 1/2-3/4" fur on the lower half of the shoulders and rump with 1/4-3/8" fuzz on the lower legs.

These were intermixed with completely healthy (though very few) and completely bald or (80% +/-) bald. This spring after a few zero degree snaps the coyotes are extremely scarce.

I believe a huge percentage die, 99%+.

I have read somewhere that besides direct predation, mange is one reason red fox do not do well around coyote. Almost always fatal in fox but coyote survive better and spread it to fox.

Everything I have read and been told by biologists is that mange in coyotes and fox are two distinct species. Coyotes can not get mange from fox or vice versa. I have experienced that as well, When the fox died out from mange in Wy, I caught no mangy coyotes. And again in Ks, when the coyotes died back from mange, I caught lots of fox, and none had a sign of mange. I believe this theory to be true from experience.

Castormound, I don't believe it to be anywhere near that high in mature coyotes, It will be that high in the pups though. Read my previous post, I addressed that.

if you where smart you would make a pile of mangy coyotes and burn or bury them as it is a mite and when the warmer weather comes lick ticks become active a healthy coyote or fox rollin around a decade mangy coyote will probably pick them up and become infected
