I used to buy individual whole frozen smelt from a seafood business. He closed years ago. It came in 11 lb. boxes. They were called zoo smelt. Not for human consumption. Anyone know where I can find them? Have searched all over. Thanks

What did you pay for them when you could find them?

Really don't remember it was years ago. Would order about 10 boxes at a time from him. Wasn't that much then I would guess no more than 150.00 for 10.

I think they are commercially fishing them in the Susitna river right about now, or soon. Right near Anchorage. I was trying to establish a commercial fishery for them a couple of years ago in southeast Alaska..still sort of working on it. A couple of years ago I was offered $1.25 a pound frozen in 25 pound boxes, I pay shipping from Alaska to Seattle.

Do you want to eat them or for bait, not that it would make a difference in the price. But if you want to eat them I would call around to some places in Seattle...like maybe Northern Fish.....and see if they have any "silver smelt", or "surf smelt" they are caught directly out of the saltwater, not like the anadromous "Columbia river smelt" or hooligan.
The river smelt/hooligan are too mushy for my liking, the "surf smelt" are firm and taste delicious.

Bait. Simple and best bait I've ever used. Coon and mink. Just carry a ice cream bucket full. Throw 3 to 5 in the big hole set. Usually daily as the mice will have trails going in too.
