Im lookin to find a good tabletop grinder that is capable of making corn meal and flour. Anyone have any suggestions? 110volt.

My dad bought an All Grain mill about 40 years ago. Mom made a lot of bread with flour out of that thing. Did a lot of course grinding for mixed grain cereal/porridge too. We still get it out once a year to make more cereal. As far as I know it's never had a problem just keeps working.

it isn't cheap but it is good , you add your own motor or they do have a motor kit.

I bought a used Diamant D525 grain mill for $202.00, with tax from an online auction. They did not know what it was and poorly described it. They are $1350.00 new, with shipping. It was close to brand new. I was originally interested in using it to make chick starter mash, but upon researching it, found it's considered the World's best hand cranked, machine convertible, flour mill. It weighs 47 pounds.



It is extremely easy to adjust and clean. I have 2 motors I could use with it, but have not yet.

You should be able to find a used mill for a fraction of the price of a new one online.

I bought dad one of these for Christmas about 10 years ago. I don't think he ever unboxed it.

There are two versions. The big wooden ones like above, and a smaller one piece one. As I understand it, the bigger wooden ones were original built for and sold to the Mormon market. A serious piece of equipment for the serious self reliant. Due to the size and weight of them, almost as much to ship as to buy.

Then there is the smaller one for the serious home bakers. It's plastic and steel and about the size of a crock pot.

A month ago, these were all over the place on ebay....on any given day.....20 to 30 to choose from. Today? I only see one.

I have never bought one but kitchen aid makes one that goes on the end of their mixer.

I must be a Millennial.

While the idea of home grown freshly ground flour might appeal to me; I could do without the bran and germ that goes with it.

If I were to grind my own flour, I'd need a laboratory style adjustable grinder, making several passes, and sifting in-between.

For my family the draw I'd the ability to store grain for longer periods of time. Flour will not store well longer than 6 months. Wheat berries can be stored much longer(years) and ground when you need it.

I came to the same conclusion after trying to use some flour ground from whole grain at the local grocery store. A little bit of that goes a long way.

Better plan for me was to buy milled flour of the type I wanted and as I needed it. True armageddon events don't come along that often. Even if they did, I could accomplish the same thing by doing what my mother does, which is to buy a case of 5# flour bags and keep the surplus in the freezer.

You stated why you do not prefer it, I just stated a possibility over looked benefit.

I guess someone could ask you about how your dislike of the finished product has to do with what grinder to buy.

After looking for wheat berries available to buy, its alot cheaper to just buy name brand flour. But my first thought with wanting a grinder is to make my own corn meal from corn i grow. Been wanting one for years and thought this might be the time to get serious about one.

I spent a little bit of time looking for wheat berries available. The places that would sell them (if they werent currently sold out) were selling 50lb bags for 50-70 bucks of berries. You can buy 50lbs of flour for about 25. Lots of posts on baking forums on why berries were more expensive than processed flour. Basically anyone that can find it at a good price was buying it locally from a farmer or buying bulk from a bakery's supplier. I dont need a few hundred pounds of wheat berries. They also dont grow wheat anywhere near me. I have a buddy that used to buy berries and make his own flour 15-20 years ago and said you used to could get bags of it for next to nothing. SO i blame the hippies and health food nutbags that have driven the prices of organic whole food blah blah products up. That and most large growing operations are under govt contract and cant sell it to individuals or thats my understanding of it. Either way looks like grinding my own flour might not be a reality but i can easily grow corn in my garden and make some cornmeal from it.
