Well after our pastor does his morning face book sermon due to the virus, the starlings that tore my house finchs' newly made nest out will be going to the promise land. My Dad's old 36" long tom will see its first action in over 50 years.

There used to be a local place......small manufacturing plant......that had about 15 martin houses up along one edge of their parking lot. During nesting season, starlings would take over. Owner was happy to have me around.

I'd spend about an hour or so there picking them off with my Beeman hw77 air rifle. No place to hide, so my blind was my truck seat, shooting out of a window. The reason each shoot would only last an hour or so was I could never get more than maybe 20 before they figured out where the source of trouble was coming from. They would move off to a safe distance and would flush at the slightest movement. They are smarter than they look.......and I'm convinced they can think with reason and communicate what they think among themselves.

Flying rats.

When was a kid my parents had what we called the garbage pit. Guess really was compose pit by today's standards and was usually dug on edge of moms main garden..
So the starlings would sit in the one elm tree and take turns trading back forth to garbage pit. Was really busy in winter..From my bedroom window I could stick the barrel of the 22 or airgun out and smack them.. Like HayDay said them buggers got smart quick..Got to a point where If I even moved the window open they flush. When weather was decent enough I'd sometime leave it just a crack open. Was rare though after a while to get them to come back on the same day after I popped the first one. Got smart quick.

All birds have the capacity to learn quick!, and yes they seem to be able to pass it along....they soon learn which species is being persecuted and the rest just carry on. It's very strange.

I was thinning the English sparrow population down one year, only picking singles, and they still figured it out fast. I had to hide behind a house plant with the window open to have a chance....I swear they sent scouts, because they were looking into the window instead of the feeder...lol.

They make a Martin house that is easily habitational for Martins, but not accessible to starlings. I know because I had the same problem. Not anymore since I got the new house.

Starlings are one of the few birds even the Audubon Society admits they struggle to find anything appreciable about them.

I don't care how nice the hand soap smells, you should never walk out of the restroom sniffing your fingers.

No doubt about it, they get smart real quick.
