Had one years ago I had a Ruger #1 Varmint-custom chambered obviously-loved.But I have heard some guys having issues with building one on a bolt action repeater with feeding issues.

I have a 22-250AI. Ballistically very similar. If that is what you are looking for.No feeding issues.

I've got a friend who has one but I've not heard that from him about that rifle . However he just had shoulder surgery and hasn't been out shooting or hunting coyotes and his is a heavy barreled rifle

Thanks-ya I have had one of those-they are great but only give you about 7% are powder capacity-whereas a swift gives you 15%.Trying to see if anyone has ever had feeding issues with them?

I called the friend with the .220 AI he hasn't had any feeding issues but he did mention case life lasts around 4-5 reloads at best with slightly reduced loads I realize that's not much help but it's a little better than nothing ???

Maybe I'm ignorant.... and I'm a big Swift fan.... but if you make a Swift even hotter at what point do you worry about barrel life?

Just asking.

I am not worried about the barrel life at all-Just want to build one in a repeater is all. When I had one years ago it was a very fun rifle to shoot. It would be built to shoot coyotes and coyotes only-ya there are tons of varmint calibers out there and I have several of them 17 remington,204,22-250,22 k hornet,17 hornet-you get my drift.

The one thing I would not do with the 220 ackley is take is shooting gophers on a hot day-thats a killer on barrel life.I have yet to shoot out a barrel in any of my guns so I am not too worried.

By the way I am a massive swift fan as well

A lot will depend on which action you use.

How the feed ramp is built and if the barrel is flat or coned could make one action less likely to mess-up over another. There's A lot of repeaters chambered in that so I'm going out on a limb and say you'll be fine even tho I don't have one.

aren't you already at the limit for most fur bullets coming apart with a regular 220?

Actually this season I was shooting barnes TSX ( NON TIPPED) out of my 22-250-45 grainers going over 4000 f.p.s. and they were amazing! no blown up coyotes! The texas heart shots were incredible-little star exit holes out the front.I shot the original Barnes x years ago and they were great on deer etc.. so I thought I would give them a try on coyotes this winter.Worked load up with the 45 grainers that shot under 1/2" out of my Tikka 22-250 M55 that I chronographed. So I want to push the limit speed wise and see what they are going to do with an Ackley improved swift.

If i CAN GET 44-4500 F.P.S. out of a 45 grain TSX Barnes it will be a true test if we can get them to hold together-which I am confident they will. The interior performance of the TSX inside coyotes I shot was spectacular.Might try 50 grainers as well-have to do some ballistic research etc.. before the reloading starts.

When I had the 220 Ackley years ago in my Ruger #1 I could get 40 grainers going 4400.Just thinking with todays powders I can do better faster!

Wanting to build one on a Tikka M55 action-they have clips as you may/may not know-will definitely take a good look at the feed ramp etc while the build is going on.

I have been shooting a Swift for over 40 years. Have two of them. One old 77V Ruger with the 26" varmint barrel and a Remington 700 classic with a standard barrel. Shoot sierra 52 gr. mhp, IMR 4064, CCI BR2 primers in Winchester cases. Killed many coyotes and other varmints plus mountain lion, antelope and deer with a Swift. I will concede that a Swift can be tough on fox and bobcats hides unless they are over 100 yards.
I admit that I am getting older and set in my ways but sounds to me like someone is trying to re-invent the wheel here.
Could you young whipper snappers enlighten me as to what point I am missing by making it an Ackley improved? I am a hide hunter and trapper so I am naturally concerned with hide damage.
What would the improved Swift do that I haven't already done with the regular Swift except cause me to do a lot more hide sewing?
Just curious.

MB Coonguy, 57 is for sure younger than me! I fully understand the enjoyment of toying with stuff. I tried lots of bullets, some powders and even magnum primers in the old swift years ago. I pushed the powder charge to near max but finally backed it down. The Swift is a great cartridge and have really enjoyed it.

Built and shot a lot of improved cartridge rifles over the years. An improved swift never appealed to me so never did that one.
Had only 1-2 ever have feeding issues and only one of those that I never have been able to fix.
Like others have said it's usually a feed ramp issue where the cartridges pop out of the magazine as soon as the bolt goes forward.

Another more troublesome issue can be the angle of feed into the barrel sometimes can run the pointed bullet square into the end of the barrel missing the chamber. This is the issue I have with a .223 AO so I sent it off and had a detachable magazine conversion done on the stock - still won't feed.

AO cartridges in general do not feed through a repeater quite as smoothly as a case with more taper but they make it into the chamber in the end.

With a Swift I'd imagine you would have the potential for the normal feed rail issues with the added concern of some possible issues related to the rimmed cartridge aspect.

ML

Would you have more options to get it right with a long action ?
