Does anyone know of a good piece of equipment or process to grind chaga?
I like it about 1/4" - 3/8" for brewing.

My process has always been to put the big chunks in an old denim pant leg,
lay it on a cement floor and then smash it with a maul until one of us gets
worn down. Not alot of fun and results in a huge variation in sizes.

Some chunks are literally as hard as rock so theres no way I am going to put
it in one of my meat grinders.

A hammer mill would be perfect I know, but I havent seen anything decent,
that is priced under $750.

Just thought I would ask you guys, maybe I am missing something obvious.

Easiest when it is still wet (before it has ever been dried).
Have you tried a coarse wood rasp?
Or a cleaver with a baton.

I'm always learning new terms here on tman. I had never heard of "chaga" before this thread so I had to look it up. Then again, we don't live in a forested- mushroomy world around here. Morels are about as fungus happy as we get.

Put it in a vice and drill holes in it with a drill? Masonry bit if it's real hard?

Wood rasp creates fines/powder, I dont want that. I already get enough of that as it is.

Cleaver and baton are not much different than my method with a 5lb maul.

I am thinking about cutting it into 1/4" slices on the band saw, then maybe it will crumble but
I doubt it. This latest chaga I got, is so dense its petrified. I think I could knapp some arrowheads
with it. LOL

Been drinking strong, jet-black chaga tea every day, for a couple years. Just straight, no sugar
or anything else added. Its a good thirst quencher to me. To me, its essentially flavorless. Best
way I can describe it, is that it tastes like paper- just a very slight woody taste.

I drink it straight as well. Used to make 1" chunks by batoning with a cleaver or hatchet until I figured out to chunk it *before* drying. Brew each chunk a few times, thoroughly dry (chaga will mold), then use with F&S. (Chaga is one of two dozen natural materials that catch the sparks from F&S in its raw uncharred state.)

I had a wood rasp (maybe it has another name) that looked more like a vegetable grater but only one size and it had a handle (haven't found a pic yet). It yielded 1/4" chunks more often than not.

Bandsaw is a brilliant idea. Let us know how that works.
