Ohio schools were supposed to open back up on April third. It was just announced that schools will be closed until, at least, May first.

Our governor just said today that the schools are closed indefinitely now.

Ours are closed for the rest of this school year. They are trying to figure out how to finish this school year either by online or mailing work packets to the kids.

Discussed this with a friend today and he pointed out that most schools are doing classes on line and things seem to be going well under the circumstances. Then he put this scenario into play by asking what if we did this full time instead of sending kids to school? Think of the money saved on buildings, buses, maintenance and such. That could possibly even lower our taxes but I'm sure our leaders would find something else to spend that on to justify keeping it.

schools here started back up online today

everything will be pass fail this semester will not count toward their gpa so my oldest will graduate with a 3.98 she would have any way she only needed one class for credit this semester the rest of the day was art classes , and working as a teachers aid. she is going to college to be an Art teacher in the fall.

college placement testing canceled they will just use the data from the ACT.

my son seems to like this he can do his school work in the morning and go fishing in the afternoon. the boys caught more than 50 suckers today brought home 29 just finished getting the last of the fillets in the brine

What do folks do when there is no good internet connection? It's not possible for some.

True about no internet. After this the school from home issue will be discussed however studies have proven you learn better from paper than a screen and from writing than typing. Physical schools are also a place to learn socialization skills. Do we really want kids staring at screens even more?

Both of my grand kids are out of school because of the closing. I spoke with my daughter yesterday, She has WiFi, all kinds of internet and all that modern stuff. In fact, my little 6-year-old grand-daughter called me yesterday and wanted me to download some app on my phone that would allow she, and I, to see each other when we talk. I had a hard time, and got the wrong app, but finally got it figured out. Now we can see each other when we talk. Something I noticed is that she sure can not sit still when talks.
Anyway, my daughter told me that the kids are going to do studies, with the teacher, where they get to see each other while they do the lessons. What I imagine will be a problem is that not all of the kids will have all of the necessary internet -- WiFi --whatever connections to take advantage of this. I know the school district supplied the kids with chrome books, which I believe is a computer of some kind.
What is good in my grand kids situation is that their mother is a teacher. For the last three weeks they have doing home schooling. The grand kids don't like it. They say they would rather be in school.

Both my wife and I teachers. Our district just launched "distance learning" yesterday. Minnesota schools are "distance learning" until May 4. I would assume there will be another announcement before that to continue distance learning through May. Essentially, we've taken the past 8 working days to put our curriculum into an online format with Google Classroom as well as make hard-copies of everything that gets delivered twice a week to student homes. Students are still required to check in for attendance each day and we're still required to put in our hours each week as teachers. For the most part, its business as usual as students are still following the same math curriculum that they normally would along with reading and a few other activities. If students don't have a device or internet at home, the school delivers them a lap top and hot spot. Parents can also opt to have hot lunches delivered to their home each day. It's been quite an undertaking for our district to organize the logistics and curriculum for all of this in 8 days but so far things seem to be going well.

Kids are one point in time are probably going to rebell against this in an epic way. They are really getting the shaft on this virus deal. On three levels.
1. They don't get their Sports graduation ceremonies , prom ceremonies or schooling
2. They're sacrificing to protect old fat unhealthy people that smoke and have bad eating habits. While not being at risk themselves.
3. They are the ones that are going to have to pay for all this socialist stimulus down the road

My daughter said she is "On Call' from 8 to 3. She has to be able to answer her students questions, get study material out to her students, be prepared for meetings and meet with students on line. She goes to her kids school and picks up assignments for her kids. It is pretty amazing that the schools put this all together in such a short period of time.

My daughter could have done "Post secondary" her senior year of high school. She could have skipped her senior year and attended college, at no cost to her. She decided she wanted to have her senior year experience and so she skipped a year of free college. She totally regrets that decision now.
My son was offered the same deal. He chose the post secondary option. His senior year of high school was spent attending college. The day after the terrorist attacks of 9/11 he joined the army under delayed enlistment. When he joined he went in at a bit of a higher rank because he had a year of college in.
He didn't miss any of the senior year experience. You forget those things that sound like an experience pretty quickly after you get out into real life.

Our 3 granddaughters are doing online school programming and have since the schools shutdown here a couple of weeks ago. 2 are 13 and in 7th grade and one is 9 and in 3rd grade. 2 are in the same school district and are using the Google Chrome laptops they have in their classrooms and thus they are very familiar with the device and the course work. They do 2-3 hours per day as the district does not want excessive screen time. The girls communicate with school friends using social networking. Our other 13 year old granddaughter has 7 40 minute periods or 4.5 hours of school per day and has adjusted very well. She does use her own or families laptop.

As to online only? There are aspects of this that sound good as to cost and other items, but socializing as youth is an important aspect in establishing a social IQ for life. There to me are some benefits and that is we could now offer education year round and move away from the old 9-10 month agriculture based school year. Some concerns are how do we educate and work with the more challenged students and other aspects.
If we adopt an online education system then we probably would need the private sector and parents to cover the majority of the costs for sports and other outside of the learning aspect of education and that will be a long term debate if we want our schools to continue to be the home of organized youth sports.

districts with out much internet are setting up wifi hot spots

every kid in the highschool here has been issued a laptop or chrome book

I don't know that any have set it up yet but I know if you park in the 3 spaces closest to the door at the library you can get on the wifi same with a few other places

if it was a big deal a wifi hotspot could be set up , charge your school issued laptop up drive to the hot spot and download your work , return at the end of the week and upload your work.

they are working with students and really if you were passing on the last day of school you will pass , this is not mandatory unless you are failing.

every district is handling it a little different but the state dropped DPI require hours of education for the year.

Its stupid to even have school (on-line or otherwise) at all right now. Its time to teach your kids more valuable things than they can learn in a class room. If things have straightened up after the regular scheduled summer break, worry about classroom learning then. This couple months of school won't make a speck of difference in the grand scheme of a kids long life.

And if they can learn academics as well as social networking with family and become more self directed why not?
