I was thinking about renting a pop up for a week to 10 days in the Black Hills instead of staying at a motel for turkey season. The motel is $200 a week and a pop up is $400+ a week. The motel would require being around "people" the pop up would not. The motel would require driving 30 miles to get to my areas the pop up would not. Motel=power shower, the pop up not sure. Motel warm the pop up in the mountains could get cold?

What to do?

You cold cook your food camping. Doubt you could do that in a motel. Would most likely about even the cost.

Law dog i know our areas are different but here a 200 dollar a week motel would be a nasty roach infested dump in the red light district .

If its in the cards you could buy a wall tent and use it for yrs

Why not buy a decent used pop up for around $1000.00 and then resell it for the same price after you're done with it?

I did an extended stay in a pop up in NE several years ago. 3 weeks of coyote trapping. Too small. You will be surprised how comfortable a good tent is. Your going to need more stuff though than just the shelter. None of it cheap. I have been camping and accumulating stuff my whole life. If your going to need lanterns, stoves, bed and bedding, maybe a generator, a heater of some sort, and containers for water, the motel will be cheaper. If you think you would like to be able to go set up most anywhere and just stay there then get a tent or a camper. Pop up is good for a 3 day weekend at the lake but not an extended stay in hunting or trapping weather. A camper wont take very many trips down a two track. They are built for paved roads.

I lived in a pop-up for about a year in the mts. of WV. Wasn't that bad, kept the rain off my head. I did however spend a lot of cold nights wishing it had regular hard sides. Bad wind and storms can be kinda hard on the pop-ups

I guess a lot of it depends on what you are looking for. If it is strictly a place to sleep, then the hotel is a better option. If the camping is part of the adventure then go that route. Over the last 5 years or so I have spent about 25 or 30 nights in a 7 x 12 enclosed trailer on various hunts (deer, antelope, and elk). There is a lot of little things that you dont think of, like where will I get a cup of coffee in the morning? Now you need to bring a coffee maker and everything that goes with it. Do I want to cook outside after dark at night? I have a little honda 2000 generator that is a must have for an off grid camping situation. We have brought along a microwave in the past with a bunch of pre cooked meals to just warm up after a long day out hunting. Another thing to consider is the security of your stuff while you are away hunting. When you leave for the day you either take valuables with you or make sure things are locked up good (which may be harder to do in a pop up). Many things to think about I guess. To me the camping is all part of the adventure, so I enjoy a little bit of roughing it. If you enjoy a hot shower and a nice soft bed then the hotel would serve you better. As I age, I am guessing those things will become more important to me than they are now. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Guessing your goal with staying away from people is the covid 19 will be goin hard at this point? For peace of mind, get the hotel, get there early and disinfect and tell staff stay out while you are there. Bring your own bedding. And whatever else.

One of these is real comfortable. The air mattress is completely inside a heavy nylon cover. So punctures are not a problem. When you need to the cheap 25 dollar walmart mattress is a good replacement. Mine is several years old now. Needs a little air about every 3rd day. frame is every bit of 20 years old.

When it is cold you need a lot of warm stuff under you. I use an old weather sleeping bag under my sleeping bag. If you want to use blankets you will need several between you and the bed. In hot summer weather it is nice and cool. If your not expecting heavy rain or high wind you could rig a tarp up over this bed. Cook on your tailgate with a coleman stove. Bed folds up small. With a tarp rain cover, a cooler, case or two of plastic water bottles, a black skillet coleman stove and this bed, you could set up/take down your camp in a half hour. Everything in the bed of your pickup.
