Just changed the gear oil in my outboard. No water in it. Do you think it would be OK to use it as bar oil in my Stihl MS170?

It will work fine, you can run all sorts of different oils as bar oil. Depends on how much you use your saw, I personally wouldn’t run it all the time although you probably could but it might wear on your bar a little bit. for occasional use it would work fine.

The oil is OMC Hi Vis gear oil for the lower unit on a 115 outboard. I think it will work if it will feed out at the same rate.

It'll be fine. New chain and bar,30 bucks. You will spend way more on Bar oil in your life time than you will on bars.

Why? A gallon of high tack bar oil is what $8-9 I wouldn't want that stinking oil slung all over my boots and pant legs. But to each his own.

you're only allowed so many sunrises... I aim to see every one of them!

We just had this discussion a week ago.....

Stop being a bunch of cheapskates and buy bar oil.

I'm so tired of cleaning up saws at work that people have run used oil in. It's dirty, it's full of metal shavings, it wrecks the oil pump over time. And it makes the saw look like a dirtbag owns it. The repair bill always reflects how the owner treats their equipment.

It will work, But we did have problems with used motor oil ruining the oil pump. Must have been some fine metal filings in it.

Heck, a gallon here in MN goes for around $5-6 when it's on sale. I just supply up then.
