I like mine (2018) but it never shuts up SO many idiot alarms they drive me nuts, the off road package with the locking rear end and crawler option only comes in the off road package and that’s stuffed with the fancy stuff you can live without.
Some stuff is cool but you can live without it really like 110 plug in the bed, 2 kinds of phone chargers, lane beeper, radar for the vehicle in front of you. I hate the seatbelt that cycles every time you go from park to drive it sucks when your checking traps all day long.
That said it has power it is good on gas unless you tow anything then it’s going down hill fast. Factory tires suck just a highway tire with M/S on them really. With good tires it’s hard to get it stuck that earns a lot of respect from me.
I got the access cab (2 door) a rare find most are 4 doors but I don’t like the long wheel base for off road and I like the looks of a 2 door model. Figure between $35,000 to $40,000 for the Off Road model.

Yeah Law Dog, I do not want all the gismos that some have to offer. Give me locking rear end or limited slip. I don't need hill assist or rock crawl, we're mostly flat land. I hear nasty things about the 2016-17 automatic transmissions.

You can go bare bones and save a lot, go to the site and build one a few different ways they have a package that removes a lot of the fluff stuff.

I owned a 2009 sport ,a second gen ,the 3rd gen started in 2016 where the tranny was redesigned .Lots of shifting to find the sweet spot for the best fuel mileage. Problem is if you came from a 2nd gen you felt the difference in the 3rd immediately. Some were freaked out by it.

Got a 98 that I've had sijnce new. Got a recall on the frame, they looked at it, said it was fine, and about ten years later, the back half disintegrated! Two years ago, I cut off the back of the frame at the cab and built new, had to build a new front crossmember and rebuild the rear. Built a flatbed, and added six inches in length. New springs all around and ready to go. Jumped in it back in Feb and drove to western Nodak, most reliable vehicle I have!

Might need to keep a new one until it’s out of warranty then trade it in for a new one to avoid paying for repairs fixing them bells and whistles would cost a bundle out of pocket. When I picked up my Tacoma they had several different types of warranties rather then one to cover everything that was a eye opener to how complexed the new trucks really are.

The shifting was one of the issues I have heard about. Not a problem? Also some have complained about weaker suspension components compared to earlier generation Tacomas. i don't notice the shifting too much. however i do notice it at times as its trying to get the most mpg. i tend to think whether it bothers you may be relative to what you are use to. my other daily driver is 4 cyclinder suv so maybe that's why im not so in tune to the tacoma shifting. but if i was to compare my generation 3 to my old stick shift generation 2 think it would be wondering what heck going on. for me i consider the mileage as one of my cons for it---even with that computerized shifting deal it still gets basically the same mpg as my old generation 2. would think they had made some vast improvements in time. heck full size f150s get similar mileage. as noted before, factory tires suck. however even in them hard pressed to get stuck and with dedicated tires they tend to go places where you might be better off not even going. and you are correct that most folks arent keen on the factory suspension. the original complaints were on the rear leaf springs not allowing hardly any weight to be put in the back. i believe they have changed all of those now. if you buy a 16-17 you can look at the leaf spring assembly and see if it has the updated package. mine has the newer leaf spring assembly and it can take a fair amount of weight keeping in mind its not really setup as a big cargo hauler--around 1000 pounds and i can feel it is loaded. usually when guys change tires they consider shock upgrades also. the bare bones models normally come with a bilstein shock made for toyota---in other words a down graded bilstein. a set of bilstein 4600 of 5100 are pretty common changes and if you are buying a truck that is couple years old might be in order anyway
