And take 3 readings in a row.....it will naturally be high on the first one as you are anxious about the results. My cardiologist told me in his office they take it 5 times and he's not allowed in the room when they take it.
I've noticed at our local medical clinic that the Dr.s have quit wearing the whites....not sure if its to avoid "white coat syndrome" or not. But I think so.....
hmmm...90/60 is normal for me though once was 110/0 (valve jobs corrected that). Dad was kinda perinoid and took it probably 6X a day and it varied all over the place from 190's to 80's (top). Doctor told him to only do 1 in a.m. and 1 in p.m. But he wouldn't listen. He was one also to change doses of what the doctors prescribed as in a day he didn't feel any different.
Not suffering from angina, I am simply wondering if that pressure reading is considered high enough for me to call my cardiologist? I haven't taken my own BP for a while, I get a check up about every 6 months and I take my BP and record it for about a week before the check up, I don't recall what my readings are when I do that, but the family doctor would always indicate they were good. I have an annual appointment the the cardiologist coming up in May.
I got myself a seniors' GPS. Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination, it tells me why I wanted to go there.
I am thinking 120/80 is pretty good, how about 142/89 @ 6:30 AM and 120/90 @ 1:00 PM?
Mr. Lion, get one of these. It goes on the wrist and it saves the last 60 readings. Looks like they are currently sold out. Very easy to use and I check my BP half a dozen times a day (somedays). I just did 25 minutes on the treadmill and I'm seeing 125/72 (age 73).
My heart misses a beat or has a half beat every 4-6 beats when at rest. Sometimes this confuses the BP machines. Need to use a stethoscope and a cuff to get a good reading. Not always, depends on the machine and how it is installed. Some health care personnel like to panic and try to change things. I just say, "lets take it the old fashion way". (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman)es then off sometimes.
Wouldn’t hurt to call the doc for peace of mind. My BP fluctuates a little high at times even with some meds. I agree with Bushmaster about his remarks on taking readings.
When mine gets to 210/120 I figure I should sit and relax a bit. Like White I am on 4 meds but after 22 years and every med/dose they could think of, the docs have decided that no matter what they prescribe, my body quickly figures how to get back to where it wants to be. If I had your readings I would not be concerned at all.
Nittany Your top numbers aren't horrible, bottom could be reduced a little. I am no doc but my wife was a nurse in a cardiac floor. I take meds for BP. My bottom number used to be the culprit, top numbers were perfect. Now my bottom numbers are good and my top numbers are climbing a little. Getting older I guess.
I didn't know I had high BP until I went in for a laser eye surgery. They took my BP before the surgery. It was 160/131. That was a year ago last February. They said I was a good candidate for a stroke with the bottom number that high. I take carvedilol and amlodipine. I also have A-fib and take warfarin for that. My BP last time I took it was 120/84. They said that was normal for my age. I use a cuff type to check my BP.

X2 I am on 4 meds and mine is always about around 140/90 and sometimes a little lower or higher.

Do all you with high BP avoid eating salty foods religiously? Ocean fish seem to be naturally salty, but they sure are good. My cardiologist gave me a list of salt substitutes to use. None of them are palatable, IMO.

Years ago when I was first diagnosed with elevated BP I used to salt EVERYTHING. So I quit using it completely (except what is in food). In 6 months my BP DID NOT improve at all. I use it now but sparingly.
120/78 is my avg. Been on HBP meds for 12 years am 58. (in 19 days) used to run 140/90-110. Med, low salt, weight loss. If i retire it would help the stress .
I've never added salt to food, only what's in the food after it's cooked. Had a fried chicken breast for lunch and a salad today. I'm sure there was salt in the breading. I used to love salted in the shell peanuts. Gave them up, though. Still eat nuts a lot, but mostly unsalted. Hazelnuts in the shell are hard to beat.

OK Wrist cuffs are bad--in general (not every one) they are inaccurate.
To get a proper blood pressure reading--sit calmly for 5 minutes with both feet on floor. With blood pressure cuff LEVEL WITH THE UPPER PART OF YOUR HEART, take blood pressure with automatic upper arm cuff.
To get it at the right level, sit at kitchen table. Put elbow on a thick book if you are about 5'9". No book if you are short, Several books if you are tall.
Goal is whatever your doctor told you. Too many variables to give recommendations on a forum. (atherosclerosis, CHF, kidney disease, peripheral artery disease, prior stroke, thyroid problems, and many others).
I appreciate all the relies. I very seldom salt anything but I must admit I eat a lot of potato chips and they have salt. I quit using a salt shaker at the dinner table at least 40 years ago.
I got myself a seniors' GPS. Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination, it tells me why I wanted to go there.
Mine runs 160/90 in town but at cabin 125/75 the other day at doc office I hit 238/138 fun times. They still can not figure out why I run high so I may have to just move to cabin for medical reasons
I have high blood pressure and have since I was a kid. Typically 130s/90s, but have seen as high as 150s/100 once. No reason for it, I'm only 32, eat well, don't smoke, active lifestyle, only occasionally drink. Cutting caffeine and salt seem to have no effect, drinking a glass or 2 of wine will bring it down to 110s/80s, but obviously that's not a permanent solution. Had my kidneys ultrasounded once with nothing found. Doctor put me on losartin, which had no effect, except to cause me to wake up in the middle of the night every night, ravage my wife, and fall back asleep, with little or no memory of it the next day. Bizarre stuff. I knew it happened, but couldn't actually remember doing it. Started about 3 weeks after I started taking the meds, and took 3 weeks to stop after I stopped taking it. I don't do anything for it now, except to keep an eye on it, mostly because I hate the idea of being tied to a pill. It makes me feel like I'm artificially being kept alive.
I figured out if I took 4 hr Sudafed it would bump me up to 138/80. So I would skip it when going to the Dr.'s office. Without it I'm 128/74. I'll take that at age 65.

128/74 BP I just took. When I eat salt like everyone has said it makes a huge difference in my BP. Today I had a can soup and salty crackers. I was very surprised my BP was as good as it was tonight.
That is a my range in BP give or take a few numbers up or down. No BP pills for me.
Give me a fish, I will eat for a day. Teach me to fish, I will eat for a lifetime
I usually have about 3 pots of coffee in my before I take my BP. I don't eat anything till noon so no food but lots of joe and not sure it would be any different read on my BP numbers.
I see some say no coffee before check.
Give me a fish, I will eat for a day. Teach me to fish, I will eat for a lifetime

Instead of blaming sugar, alcohol, carbs/grains causing HB and obesity. The food industry blamed salt for high blood pressure. Same with cholesterol in eggs are bad for you too. Total BS.
They did a study in 36 country's and looked at heart disease and salt consumption per capita and surprisingly found the country that ate four TABLESPOONS per day per person, had the lowest heart disease of any country.
Animals walk miles for salt. We need salt to survive. They now say we should eat a tablespoon a day, or salt your food to taste. your body wont let you eat too much salt. I stopped eating salt for years and now eating it again and I feel way better.
I had high blood pressure and was given a prescription for BP meds. I didnt take them, and just suffered through the headaches and feeling like crap until I educated myself on the keto diet and after giving up sugar and lowering carbs and stopped alcohol. I have normal blood pressure, lost weigh and feel great.
It can be reversed if you want it . Same with Type two diabetic, change your diet and it goes away. Or live with the meds that's just treating the symptoms. Not the cause.
Just checked mine. 134/78. I have opposite of white coat syndrome. When I go in to the doctors office it's always near perfect. When I'm home is when I have problems. I blame it on my kids driving me nuts.
Mine was high a 5-6 years ago so I had to take a pill every morning to get it down. The pill helped but not as much as losing 40 pounds and walking every day. Eventually I got it to 120/80 but I noticed my morning numbers were always higher (130/90) so I started taking my BP pill before bed instead of in the morning and now for the last 2 years things stay at 120/80 throughout the day.
Just checked mine before we head out for a five mile run this AM ..its 107 over 70, and thats about where mine stays most days typically. You guys should get out and run more. Jim
Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.
Well I am about your age and take 4 different BP meds each day. I would not, and my doc would, not be pleased with that bottom number at 89 or 90.
Your situation may be different.
Your mileage may vary
I'm similar to White, age, and meds. Agree, 100% this is the internet. Nothing, nobody can give you better info than your Dr. that's the guy to talk to about medical advice. Hope your doing well. Case

When I am not sick my temperature is 96. If I take enough blood pressure medicine to make my Dr happy I have the energy of a sloth along with other trouble. I take a little extra a few days before my D.O.T. physical. Dr dont like it but I dont believe feeling tired all day is a sign that my health is being corrected by meds.
In my completely unqualified opinion drs dont always get it right. my temperature is evidence that the numbers are not the same normal for everyone

Ha, Ha. I have trouble walking, let alone trying to run. I tripped on a garden hose yesterday morning.
I think normal blood pressure is different for everyone but lifestyle certainly can make a difference.
Sit on your horse on top of a ridge, look out across the country and tell me there is no God.
I very seldom have a systolic reading with an automatic BP cuff that I am happy with. Diastolic is fine. When taken by a nurse/Dr. with a manual cuff. Both numbers are fine. I take BP meds.
Everyone is different and there is no one size fits all. I am a stress eater and as this post started over and copied my work causes stress for me it did/does. August 7th, 2021 was my last day as Athletic Director at our school, 13 years. This job was incredibly stressful. Kathy and I decided it was a good time to change our lives. We went low carb, no way we could do keto, not for us. We cut refined sugars and most sugars, (my cheat for stress is sweets, "Schwans ice cream"). We cut refined flours, and most carbs. No more potatoes, no more breads, pastas, etc. It works for us. I have lost 64 pounds Kathy has lost 30 pounds. Add in more time for thinking about us, exercise, etc. my blood pressure is now running 117/75. I still take a med with water segment. I now come home after school doing things I never would see, haul garbage, sweep, vacuum, dust, prep supper. Then I go to the garage and putter. No more everything for everyone else. As I stated I believe each of us is different and need to find what works or us. Apologies this got long but I am pretty happy with our changes.
Another success story. Congratulations. Meds didn't do it . Diet did.
Most doctors dont want to cure you.they get kick backs from big pharma to get you on a pill regiment for life. then you have to come back and see them nexy month. HBP is the golden goose that buys their Porche
Pretty high. They gave me some blood pressure meds, the numbers came down some, but when I tried to get a refill, they said I have to go back to the doctor. Why the heck did they say I have 3 refills left if I have to go back to the doctor every time? That was last spring.
I avoid salt like the plague but that doesn't seem to matter. I seriously do not know if this is really serious like they say or if it's a big money wheel for the doctors and the pharmacies. I hate doctoring.
My stress levels are OFF THE CHART right now but that is out of my hands. It'll get better with time.
Bernie, sorry to hear about the stress and not being able to control it. I was the same but was somewhat greed based, AD was money driven so we can retire this year. But the stress was not worth it. Had to get out of it and away from the stress. If we can help in anyway let me know.
Mines been 120/80 most of my life, just got turned down for another life insurance policy because They said it’s to high for my age at 68, doctor says that’s where it runs, so what do you do??
Im not a med nut so I guess no life insurance now !!
Sorry if my opinions or replies offend you, they are not meant to !

120/80 is too high? I do know the AMA wants the standard of BP to be UNDER 120 and UNDER 80. But 120/80 is perfect.
Another story about salt. I used to not use much salt, as a matter of fact I quit for a few years altogether. BP didn't go down at all. Lately the doc I have been seeing for an auto immune disorder has been doing blood panels every other month. My sodium levels were LOW. The remedy-add more salt in your diet!

I have always opted for staying away from stress in career and finances. Just not worth it. Those are things you can control. Other things you cannot.
If one searches for reasons causing high blood pressure you will find that lack of magnesium in your diet is one of the top items. A magnesium supplement like magnesium glycinate or magnesium threonate can be helpful. It appears that getting enough magnesium in one's diet is not easy for most individuals.
Also, when you put the cuff on make sure the line up dot on the cuff is in line with the inside center of your elbow joint. If not, it will likely give an incorrect reading

Bernie Im not sure about down there but up here the BP you posted is considered a medical emergency. I've been an EMT for 10 years now and my youngest daughter is a critical care paramedic. I just had a conversation with her about this last night. A neighbour came over to have me take his BP. It was 200/90 and he refused to go to the ER. I called her and she said to tell him he has to go, its just to dangerous not to. Called his doctor and found out he cant get in to see him until late April so convinced him to go to the ER. Not trying to scare you, but those numbers are dangerously high.
Reducing salt often doesnt help. Read the book "the lies my doctor told me" talks about salt and BP.
One thing to take into account on blood pressure is chronic pain will increase your blood pressure. A bad back, knee, ankle, shoulder or any area that causes constant pain will raise your bp. How much depends on severity of pain, what triggers it and several other factors.
In a nutshell, when a person eats a high carb diet their kidneys retain salt and water. And that excess water is stored as fat and is also introduced into your blood stream, and like any closed hydraulic system, when you add more liquid, the pressure goes up. Also, the plaque in the arteries increases pressure of course.
The solution is not meds. All one has to do is stop eating, potatoes, noodles, bread ,rice, all grains, sugar and beer. High blood pressure is just a symptom of the onset of diabetes.
I have lost 35 pounds since the end of January. Started feeling light headed a couple weeks ago. Started taking blood pressure readings. Lowest was 98/62. Stopped taking bp meds 3 days ago, bp today was 119/76 and no longer light headed. Will get another week of no meds data and then go talk to the doc.

Been a type 2 for a few years now with zero bp issue. Can you elaborate? Is there something coming I need to get out in front of?
You can and should reverse your type II. Just change your diet. There are many symptoms of diabetes. Worsening vison, frequent urination, numbing of hands and feet, skin problems, HBP, heart attack and stroke.
You can lower our blood sugar if you drink a couple tablespoons of apple cider vinegar mixed in a glass of water before each meal. its been proven in studies.
Also drink Hibiscus tea after meals. It also proven in studies to lower blood sugar. Taste like cranberry juice I drink it every day. Lemon water is very good for you too.
I was on the same BP meds for 15 years. Always 125/80. 18 months after covid I tried to donate blood. It was 205/110. Went and seen my doc. Switched meds. Now on 2 different. Now around 135/90 but my heart rate went from 75 to a 100. Heading in this morning for blood work. Trying to get thinks better.
My wife always had low BP. We got covid the same time. Hers spiked to 150/100. She started taking my leftover old.meds. her numbers are perfect now. She is getting blood work done this morning as well.
Donating blood to the red cross has lead to several conversations. The ladies there said they have seen a vary large rise in average BP across the board since covid. I mentioned that to my Dr. He laughed and left the room. His nurse nodded in agreement after he left.

A lack of salt causes blood pressure issues too. 5 years ago I had that problem. Don't worry about salt anymore and BP yesterday was 121 over 70. Talk to your doctor and eat some salt.
119/70 just took mine. Mine gets better as day goes on and if I do a lot of physical labor mine goes down from this number also. I know that seems odd but that is how my BP is.
Give me a fish, I will eat for a day. Teach me to fish, I will eat for a lifetime

I agree with this 100%. Lots of studies prove it
I went on this low carb high protein diet for about 2 months. I lost a little over 10 pounds. But, my BP never really changed. However, constipation became a major issue. I tried everything to remedy that, tablespoons of olive oil, Metamucil, even Miralax. Nothing helped. I still avoid carbs to a point. I did find a can of Coors Light or a couple prunes helped the constipation problem.
According to a nephrologist I see for stage 3 kidney disease, a high protein, low carb diet is hard on your kidneys. He told me to reduce my protein intake some and eat some grains, fruit, and fiber.

Salt, no salt Meds, no meds Do what works for me, see a doctor
A whole lot of conflicting information in this thread.
Those with high blood pressure - see a doctor. Discuss holistics, discuss meds, discuss complications of high blood pressure over time. Then decide what’s best for you. Keep in mind you may get your treatment right the first time or it may take several attempts at different treatments to find what works for you.
Those with high sugar due to type II diabetes - this is not a “nutshell” disease. Type II is a condition where one’s body does not produce enough insulin. It is also a disease where that insulin in not metabolized as efficiently as it should. Yes, you lower you blood sugar by reducing sweets (simple carbs) and starches (complex carbs). Starches/carbohydrates are worse for you than sweets. Sweets are metabolized by insulin. Carbs must first be converted to sugar before the body can metabolize them with insulin. Exercise can not be emphasized enough, even small amounts, even if it is just walking. Exercise helps the body produce more insulin and also helps the body use it more efficiently, lowering blood sugar levels.
Depending on your individual situation you may be able to bring your glucose levels back to normal with just exercise and watching your diet. You may need a little insulin, you may need a lot of insulin.
Most folks know someone who is diabetic, some will test their blood to see if “they are diabetic”. While it is good to know if you have high blood sugar, this test is only a snapshot of what your sugar level is at that moment. A simple blood test, which can be done when you have any other blood work done, can give you a more accurate diagnosis. This test is called an A1C test. Some doctors run this test when you have other blood work done, some doctors will check this if you ask for it to be done. Ask.
If you have diabetes please see a doctor, and not just you family doctor. Endocrinologist (gland doctors) treat the whole body. This is very important as diabetes is a whole body disease. Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to blindness, nerve damage to hands and feet (peripheral neuropathy), amputation of toes, feet and legs, kidney disease just to name a few. These complications can practically be eliminated with proper monitoring and treatment.
Finally, diabetes can NOT be cured. Proper treatment and monitoring can bring your glucose numbers back to normal, which renders you as a non-diabetic SYMPTOMATICALLY. This only means that you no longer show symptoms of diabetes. But return to your diet and level of exercise and your high sugar will return.
Diabetes CAN be cured. The damage is already done to your body, but you wont need insulin or have continuing symptoms if you change your diet to low carb. No more symptom's so no more problems.
Some of you guys need to find new doctors, or better yet change your diet and quit seeing them.

I see a few type 2 diabetes folks that take their meds and still keep eating things they should not, it amazes me they get by with it bu it will catch up with them.
Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!
Very true the meds only mask the systems. When you have been eating a high carb diet for a long time your body cant keep up with the insulin needed to neutralize all the blood sugar, so it just gives up. And then you are insulin resistant, and bad things are happing to your body.
The doctors will be happy to write you a prescription and get their kick back from the drug companies and you will be back to see them next month. Win win for them.
I also find it funny that the medical industry refers to it as a disease. Its not a disease. Its self inflicted slow death. No different than a drug user, smoker or alcoholic.

Couldnt agree more. The information is out there and more coming every day. This fella is the doctor that cured me. When I was diagnosed with RA my CRP was off the charts. Well over 200. According to modern medicine, my family doctor, and two rheumatologists there was no option other than drugs. I refused and found this clinic and now my CRP is normal. No symptoms at all.
Yukonjeff, you mentioned alcoholism. Just because one stops drinking alcohol does not mean they are no longer an alcoholic. Start drinking again and you again go down that dark hole. Likewise, just because you control your sugar and carb intake to the point that your glucose levels return to normal does not mean you are cured of diabetes. Overwhelm you body with more sugar and carbs than you can naturally metabolize and your diabetes will return. Rather than argue the semantics on the definition on cured, maybe a more accurate term would be “dormant”. Controlled, you no longer suffer the affects or consequences, uncontrolled they return.
I partially agree with you that folks can control diabetes with diet alone. But not everyone is able to do this by diet alone, and require insulin. We can probably also agree that those who are less conscientious about diet and exercise require more insulin due to their habits than they should.
Get fit and stay that way so your acm risk% goes way down. just being the proper weight and walking a few miles a day will lower your acm risk% by hundreds of %. Not to mention your quality of life goes way up.

This is the question I had after about a year with no symptoms. Was i 'cured' or not ? Modern medicine says no you cant "cure' RA. However 5 years later I can now eat certain things that I couldnt before without a major flare up. Am I cured?? My CRP levels are normal, I have zero symptoms, and my blood work including my A1C are perfect as is my BP. All those markers were in bad shape before so I think Im cured.
