Some stuff is cool but you can live without it really like 110 plug in the bed, 2 kinds of phone chargers, lane beeper, radar for the vehicle in front of you. I hate the seatbelt that cycles every time you go from park to drive it sucks when your checking traps all day long.

That said it has power it is good on gas unless you tow anything then it’s going down hill fast. Factory tires suck just a highway tire with M/S on them really. With good tires it’s hard to get it stuck that earns a lot of respect from me.

I got the access cab (2 door) a rare find most are 4 doors but I don’t like the long wheel base for off road and I like the looks of a 2 door model. Figure between $35,000 to $40,000 for the Off Road model.

How much would a 4 wheel drive manual Tacoma run new about ? With no off road, an not all extra options u mention, more plain Jane. 4 wheel drive, manual transmission , air, tilt, radio, cruise, an that it, if there is such Tacoma without so many options

Bought my 1st in 91, 200,000 plus , 96 200,000 plus, very minor repairs couple ball joints, 2006 Tundra, 250,000 1 tie rod, have 2017 Tacoma now, other good truck. Replaced shocks, struts, on all trucks at 150,000 plus tran oil change. Know who owns 2 of these vehicles. Each 1 has 300,000 plus miles. I have no complaints, and resell valve is excellent. Sold each vehicle, and everyone sold within 2 weeks. Only problem is scammers and low ballers.

If you want a new vehicle do a build and price online. You can choose the options you want on a vehicle.I have bought several new vehicles custom ordered from the factory. There is no more cost to do that than there is buying new off the lot. There is a waiting period however.

coonman When I tried to build one the manual trans wasn't available until I got into the high-end models. Just the opposite of what it used to be!
Maybe I was building it wrong!?!?

Manuals come in the sport package most options are in one package or another, the off-road with the deluxe traction package only comes with a auto trans.

Coonman best to build one on line to figure out a price that way, I’d start with a SR5 and see what you can add to it. I believe the “commercial“ option removes the unneeded options a guy can do without.

Anybody have the "brake actuated limited slip" rear differential?

I think in 2006 Toyota redesigned the ball joint setup to be similar to domestic, no fail type. That means if it wears out the wheel won't flop under. Early Toyotas and Hondas both had that issue. New ones, no.

My 2000 model had no problems with ball joints. Replaced them once at around 400,000 miles when my mechanic said they seemed to be a bit worn. Still going with 676,000 miles. Used transmission should be installed by the end of the day tomorrow, and I'll be back on the road with it.

Paul Thinking seriously about replacing the old F150 with a Tacoma. Testimony like yours is a reason why!
But I do not want to buy the top-end model for what I do and it looks like the better locking rear differential may only be available in the TRD and better models.
I do hope I'm wrong!!

I don't know anything about the newer models. That 2000 model is as new as I have. I'll run it until I croak - lol. I like it especially because it has lock-out hubs. You can't seem to get that option any more. My 95 model didn't have lock-outs and I had trouble with the front end drive train parts wearing out. That front drive train turned whenever the truck moved.

The Higher end TRD Off Road models and a few others have the electronic locking rear differential. We have a few Tacoma's. One is a 2010 and it has what I guess they call the new rear limited slip. Up till 2008 the TRD Sports came with a mechanical limited slip, after that they went to the one that works off the ABS. Mine is Pre Runner, or full size 2WD model. I have to say the system works very well. I use the truck heavily all winter in Upstate NY, and with some aggressive tires I have no complaints with it and have never gotten stuck. When my 2007 went in for a new frame, they loaned me a 2016 4WD access cab automatic. As I drove it off their lot we had a snowstorm with 2-3 feet of snow on the roads, and even with the stock tires that truck was a beast.(it did have way too many buttons and gadgets for me though ) Also the interior seemed roomier that the 2nd. generation Tacoma's. I would have no issues buying one, but if I was going to, I would try to find a low mileage used one that had the options I wanted. Like Paul said also, lock outs are no longer an option, but there is a guy on Tacoma World that builds a kit to install them, and it runs about 1K to do it. The newer ones will have some minor quirks, they seem to eat front wheel bearings pretty regularly, at under 100K usually. You may find that a locking rear diff. isn't really a necessity as the Tacoma's are quite capable without it.
