Do you remember the old Quarantines? They had a bunch of them. For hooping cough, for measles, for diphtheria, small pox, chicken pox, the mumps, scarlet fever and probably a bunch I am not thinking of. I don't remember the first one our house How many remember the old Quarantined for, but I was the recipient of it at the age of 2years old... Diphtheria. The was an epidemic in our town mostly, or so I was told, young children. There was four children under six that had it in one square block that I lived.. Fortunately for me I was the only one of the 4 that survived. Mother said that the old doctor stayed at our house sleeping in a chair beside my bed for 3 nights. I believe the only thing they had at the time was sulfa drugs. My dad worked on the railroad and was gone every other day for 24 hours at a time. When he got back he was not permitted in the house and he had to stay with my grand parents for a week. I those days the board of health came out nailed a sign on the front of the house and if you got crossing the line, the doorway, and got caught they would haul you off to jail. Although I don't remember the first one, but do remember the one we had for measles , chicken pox, the mump and hooping cough. Those were the good old days. I don't believe there was much penicillin used in our area until after the war. and most of the troops were home. Mother said when the doctor was finally permitted to removed the quarantine sign for the diphtheria he brought the sign in and gave it to me. I had that sign for many years, then it finally disappeared. The doctor told mother, that was my badge of honor. Here is the same sign. Garry-

I remember TB quarantines when I was in school.

They had diphtheria vaccine when I was a kid. Mumps, 3 day measles and chicken pox though Mom's would take their kids to play over at whoevers house where somebody had one of them to get it "over with". Especially mumps. I can remember being told boys needed to get mump's at a young age so they would not "move down" on you.

Yep Pete. Pretty regular everybody got a "TB tine" test at school. They stuck a little 4 pronged pin in the underside of your forearm. A few days later they "read" it. Lots of false positives. Anybody testing positive was out of school for a few days till they could determine if they actually were TB positive. If they were they were the whole family was quarantined for awhile and infected person started receiving streptomycin. i don't know what they treat TB with today but streptomycin is very hard on your teeth.

Is that the test that left a divot in your forearm? I remember having to stay in the house with chicken pox.

I think back in old days it was probably easier to quarantine folks. Everyone was just more spread out to begin with. Lot less moving around most families had just one car and mom was home with kids while dad worked..Just whole different thinking on lots of stuff.. I recall my dad saying back when I was a kid. There was a spring here and a spring there, artisan over there we'd stop fill our canteens..All got capped and closed off during Polio scare..

I remember a time when my father couldn't ship cattle across state lines do to bangs disease. Many states had similar quarantines. It was screw worm before that. I remember stories told of cholera in Birmingham. One older lady told of her parents being buried in the same grave as one had died in the morning the other in the afternoon. Buried without a funeral for fear of the disease.

I’d like to see the true TB numbers that are coming across the southern border everyday that are untreated in 3 rd world countries.
Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!

You still cant ship cattle with bangs, brucellosis or several other diseases. At least not legally.
