Local guy selling a dozen NW 1.75 with outside lamination for 50 bucks. Judging from the pics they look like pretty solid traps but i’m so new to trapping I really don't know! Should I snatch them up or save my money for some better coyote catchers?

From the Pics I see the Laminations on the Jaws are not the best. But I would have to push down on the levers to see if the springs are strong. If you feel they are strong, snatch them up. As a new Trapper if you can catch your target species with those Traps. $50 bucks is a good deal for #1.75 Northwoods.

Why is he selling them would be a question I would ask and make sure he looks you in the eyes when he answers. If he don't,walk away.

I have 2 buddies that love those style of traps and they catch Coyotes

P.S. Welcome to Trapperman!

What are you waiting for!!!

If the springs are strong, no pitting on the metal and the lam job is solid. That is a heck of a deal.

If they don’t work out for you, you should be able to trade them up without a problem.

That's a real Jethro lam job, but they should catch just fine.

Thanks for all the advice and the welcome fellas!! I’m meeting with the guy tomorrow and hoping they’ll make some good additions to my quickly growing number of traps! wink

Looks like there are 13 in the pic. For 50& hard to pass up. You could replace springs or 4-coil em if springs are weak and still be way cheaper than new traps

I am curious, if the springs are weak cant you just get a music spring kit?

If so then all you need to do is tune out the pan creep, set the tension, and wax on!

That has to be the worst lamination job I have ever seen but $50 is a good deal

I picked up a couple hundred 1.5 and 1.75 back in Oregon. Used a few of the 1.5s for coon, they connected and held...but don’t see why they seem popular? Could someone point out the high points that I’m not seeing?
On the flip side that seems like a good deal aside from the booger lams...snag em and clean up what you can on the laminations (sharp spots if any) and use em.

If you get them take a hand grinder and angle knock those ends off the laminations.

The chains will need replaced. Good traps. I paid 12 a piece years ago and was ok with it. I have a hundred or so. Caught a lot of yotes with them. Plan on new springs and chain set up.

Northwoods 1.75 are my go-to fox traps. That is a great price, jump on it before someone else does.

Even if the springs are weak, they are easily replaced. As mentioned above, sloppy laminations. Laminations are not necessary on that trap but strong springs are to prevent foot damage. You could remove the lams or just use as is.

Eh...wot?

I'd pass on them if strictly used for yotes

$50 / 13 traps = $3.85 a trap. Unless they are something you would never use or are scared of cleaning and tuning on them I say you wont find a better deal.

I had bought Northwoods 1 1/2 and 1 3/4 coils brand new when they where still selling back in the early 80's .I still got most of them to today . Good trap , if you use them for coon ,better off with a chew guard on them.Because of the space under the jaws.
