NIce! good looking river fishing weights. If i could find a reasonable supply of lead I would get into casting myself.

I used to cast all sorts of lead items, lots of satisfaction doing that.
Just be sure to have really good ventilation, and don't let you mom use those kitchen utensils be used for cooking food anymore

I cast bullets but don't have a mold for sinkers. so, I just twist some stainless steel or brass wire with a loop in the end and lay it small ladle. Then I pour lead into the ladle - around the wire. Then I have a spoonful of solid lead with a wire loop sticking out. Not the ideal shape, I guess, but it works. I only make a dozen or so it's not worth it to me to buy a mold. Maybe I'll have to try to make a better sinker mold some day. I guess you can make them out of wood and they will last for a little while.

wolfdog91, check the thrift shops for mini muffin pans to make ingots.they are easy to drop in the pour pot and melt faster than the large size.

Those are my favorite style of sinker. Thought many times about getting a mold for that style and making my own.

Get the mold and lead hotter and the wrinkles will go away. They do look very good and are an excellent start to the affliction of casting lead. Are you using pure lead or an alloy? I started casting with a mold I made for decoy anchors. Now I have 3 or 4 sinker, split shot, and jig molds, plus 15 plus bullet molds with more to come. It's only money.

What Paul said. Try preheating your mould on the top of your lead pot, while it is warming up, or buy a used hotplate and use that to preheat the mould. Mould temp is the key to getting rid of those wrinkles. Not a real big deal with sinkers, but when you start casting bullets it is huge. Pour as fast as you can the first couple fills and don't even look at the results. Four or five fast fills with a preheated mould and the wrinkles will start going away, which means your mould is getting warm. Also with the Lee pots try setting the dial to @ 5 or 6. If you get the lead too hot it takes longer to get the mould and lead into the same temp range and wrinkles or poor fill out is the result.
You can also make the surface on those sinkers harder by dropping them directly from the mould into a bucket of cold water.
The wire that goes through the sinker to make the hole for the line to be threaded through. The directions that come with most sinker moulds tell you to put liquid soap on them to keep the lead from sticking to them and it works, but not nearly as well as Synthetic 2-cycle oil. Just put a little on a rag and pull the wires through the rag about every 20 pours or so.
Not sure if you cleaned that mould when it was new, but a thorough scrubbing with a toothbrush and alcohol will take out any factory oils which will also cause wrinkles. It's a good idea to clean a new mould, run at least three heat cycles then clean it again, to remove oils that sweat out of the metal. Usually takes a couple casting sessions to really get a mould running well and to figure out what it likes.
Been loading a few .38 Spl's myself the last couple nights after dinner.

What all Rally stated . I do the same for what he stated for when I cast sinkers and bullets. and jigs for fishing, Also do not forget to flux your alloy. You can use candles or sawdust .You want it to burn and mix that in your alloy to get the dirt and anything else that is in the mix,I use ground up corn cobs for my flux and when it burns I mix it in then you will have better fill also beside what Rally said . Good start you done and for use of sinkers.

When I was casting battery cable terminal ends for a company we would take a rag with baby powder tied into it and "dust" the inside of the mold frequently. It made a big difference in how smooth the castings were and kept them from sticking to the mold.

Eh...wot?
