We have many dairy farmers around here plant what are called twin rows for silage corn. The two rows are 7 inches apart still with the 30 inches between rows. This way they can ramp up plant populations to about 38-40K With silage getting ripe is not the issue, getting to black layer past mid kernel milk line. I do not know if any thing like this takes place in commercial sweet corn production, we do have some planting soybeans this way also.

If it doesn't rain once or twice when the tassels are dropping pollen you won't do good, I run a hose up in the air like it's raining to try to mimick a rain

I've been planting milo and soybeans that way for many years. Leaving a space in the middle still allows room for tractor tires for spraying and leaves room in the middles so the plants get sunlight from one side or the other. Never did corn that way because of picking.

Only grow 2 or 3 acres but populations in the low 20's will make you a lot happier. On the open pollinated corn I use for cornmeal 18,000 seeds work better. mike
