Sharpen my knives with a cheap little 110 v 1 inch belt sander but it turns too fast and over heats the tip of the blade if your not careful.

Anyone have any experience with a cheap vfd I could use on the belt sander to slow it down ?

I'm more familiar with 3 phase VFDs or 220 converters with VFDs. From what I understand the single phase ones are pretty specific capability wise. I gather they are not compatible with most single phase motors because of starting current. They will also not work with a motor that has a capacitor start, centrifugal switch or any motor with a separate starting winding.

I grind knives on a belt sander all the time. Just pay attention to what you're doing and dunk often.

EDIT: A 1" belt sander is not likely to have any of the starting issues so you're case may work but specs would be needed to be sure.
