When I was in graduate school, a good friend was doing her thesis work on Collard Dove vs. Mourning Dove food competition. The Mourning Doves used to beat the snot out of the Collared Doves in the aviary.

Recent literature I can find pretty much dispels any competition. Most states, however, treat them as a recent invasive and do not have closed seasons or bag limits.

I've been taking advantage of their "invasiveness" for several years now. The weight of a cleaned breast is just about twice that of a mourning dove and the meat is very similar (I can't tell any difference in taste). They can be pretty sporty as well, especially with a beat up old pellet gun.

Jack, do you know the year of manufacture of the Sheridan Blue Streak? Nice string of doves. Not protected here either.

Yep. They can now be found across the rural parts of eastern Colorado and every town I have visited. Find an abandoned farmstead with a couple elm trees and a wheat field and likely there is a couple breeding pairs nearby. Quite interesting how they increased from virtually nonexistent to very common in roughly 20 years. Probably bad for mourning doves but at least their huntable. Make good hanging bait in a cage trap too.

Not sure about any interbreeding but did notice a collared paired with a morning on my farm lane yesterday morning. Thought that was odd so I will keep track if I see it again as its by the farmstead windbreak where the morning doves annually nest............... the mike

Rimrock1 -

Sorry man! I have no idea. Actually, the pellet rifle doesn't belong to me. I've had it for 5 or 6 years as a loaner from a friend. On the right side of the receiver it says SHERIDAN PRODUCTS INC., and below that is stamped RACINE WIS - MADE IN U.S.A. On the left side of the receiver, "BLUE STREAK" 5m/mCAL. I couldn't find a serial number to look up the date of manufacture. Still shoots real good.

Jack,

Sheridan started marking the Blue Streak with serial numbers in 1972, so this one is earlier. No finer pumper made.

Here are a couple of mine.

Thanks Rimrock. Those appear to be dandies! They've been taken well care of through the years.

NC treats the two similarly. We can only shoot either during our common dove seasons and a combined bag limit. When I lived on a barrier island that was very narrow but 40 miles long, the Eurasian doves were common in some villages but absent in others. Villages on either side of me had them, but they were not were seen or heard where I lived.
