Curl up on their back with their mouths open playing dead, the grinners of the snake family. Built more like a rattler it gets the heart going when you about step on one.

Cool serpent, Wolfie. Up thisaway we have two color phases of those....dark charcoal like the one your holding, and the more common yellowish with big dark spots.

yup, one of the coolest we have around. I've only ever encountered a handful in 40 years of stomping around the woods

Judging by where the tail is I think you'll want to throw the hoodie in the wash before you hug the better half. Classified as endangered here and have never seen one in the wild. Thanks for sharing.

Very cool!
In forty years of stomping the woods, I've only seen a couple of those.

If you find them on a flat surface, they flatten right out and you'd swear they are already been squashed or stepped on. lol.

I used tot rack them down with the MNR who had transmitters in them. Every threat display was different. Hissing, playing dead, crawling away, puffing up with air, flattening out their hole body...

animated little buggers

I'm not too far from you Jan, and I've never seen a dark one. I do see tons of the "rattlesnake" colored ones, probably more than any other specie of snake, even garter snakes. I must live in the perfect habitat for them, I never fail to see several each season.

I remember last morel season, I was standing there surveying the woods alone, when I heard a long, sustained hissing sound. I turned and spotted probably the biggest hognose I've ever seen, and it was about 8-10 feet away. Normally they dont go into any of their defensive antics unless you are about to grab them. Dont know what the deal was with that one, just wanted some attention I guess.

This is just one that was catching some rays beside the house one day.....

And yes Wolfie, these snakes as well as garters, will make your hands stink bad.

Hey, Northcountry. When I was a G-Man I over in Ogemaw Co. I saw them (the snake)quite often, and the dark ones were not as common. I would guess maybe only a quarter of them?????. I didn't tally them! I don't see many of either over here in Roscommon Co.by comparison
