I went to AAMCO and they still have my old broken transmission there. We checked the number on the transmission and it is an R-150F, which is what is supposed to be in there for the 3.4 liter engine. We then used a mirror to see the number on the transmission that they installed, and it's a W59, which is for the 2.7 liter engine. The mechanic there said they would probably have to charge me labor to swap out for the correct transmission. I don't see it that way. The boss wasn't there today, so I'll make sure he's there before I go in and present my case for them to take care of everything. I told them I wanted them to acquire the transmission and install it. I didn't tell them to acquire the wrong transmission and install it. We'll see how this goes. Hoping for the best.

That explains the drastic drop in fuel mileage.

Not Paul's mistake in any way. Should be done right the first time , not make the customer eat part of the cost of the mistake.

Paul , if need be and not handled in a professional manner to repair the vehicle to manufacturers specifications as factory would have required , AAMCO does have a corporate office and likely a website/1-800 phone number. Just sayin.....

They’re a big company and the HQ is in Pennsylvania. Probably a franchise but they still won’t like the big house getting in their business if you sound like you’ll go that route.

I was getting 17 before the transmission swap and 12 after. I use to get a bit better mileage, but after 677,000+ miles, I'm good with 17.

I went to AAMCO in Phoenix, AZ, in the 1980's for a recommended band adjustment on my Dodge Ramcharger. They showed me a pound or so of metal shavings and said the automatic tranny required a complete rebuild. They got nasty when I declined and insisted I sign a form relieving them any and all responsibility before they would let me get my vehicle back. Eventually I modified and signed the form. After driving a couple of blocks I raised the hood to check the transmission. It was grossly over-filled. Shortly after that to be safe I drained and refilled the transmission at my own expense. Never again AAMCO for me.

Tell them.....they just had the high cost of an education.....now put the correct tranny in. It wasn’t like you brought your own used parts to the shop. You had put your trust in them to do the job right the first time.

They have no idea the black eye they can have over this. Pretty sad if they do business like that.

Apparently they can't read numbers.

That's 100% on them. If you took your vehicle in to get a trans. fluid & filter change would they look and see what transmission you had in the vehicle or would they just say it's a Toyota and go with that? Salvage yard websites usually have what engine is in the vehicle the part came out of along with what model transmission it is and if it's a manual or auto.Honestly it sounds like they're a bunch of morons.Whoever ordered the transmission didn't take the time to make sure it was right. Not your fault.

I'll add they should've double checked the part numbers when they had the used one laying on the floor before they put it in. That's basic and saves more time than it costs.
I agree with calling corporate if need be.

The way I read this and the other topic
it's my opinion they knew exactly what they were doing.
I did not think that trans swap would be THAT much ratio difference,
but I'm not the trans franchise they are.

Thanks for informing, it's one way we learn.

I looked those part numbers up and there's not much difference in final ratio.
Od Paul had was .83:1 and the replacement is .81:1, fourth is direct on both.

Could it be a combination of gear ratio with Speedo being off? This really surprised me if that little difference cut his mileage over 25%.
BUT! I've been wrong many times before!

Maybe the site I got the ratios at is wrong(wiki) smile
