I'm chipping away at my list of furbearers to trap and get mounted. While I have caught all three species of weasels, I have yet to mount a long tailed weasel. Unfortunately I just had one tanned instead of mounted. Any advice on areas that I would have a better than average possibility of snagging one? My first least weasel is getting freeze dried and my short tail is already in my fur room. Will travel. Been to a dozen states so far in my quest. Twenty five species down seven to go. Thanks, Jim

If any member of the weasel family's tail got as long as a lions it wouldn't be safe to go outdoors

Not like I would recommend a trip to NJ, however they do exist here (not many but a few around)... The tough part is you will need to snare or live trap one, I am almost certain eric space has caught them (you may want to PM him he is on here) he may chime in?...

Although I have caught a few on camera I have yet to catch one here with our limited methods...

You could likely catch a long tail in Northern Wisconsin and non-resident trapping is available. I know that a number of the Wisconsin fellows could help, perhaps RdFx among them. I can explain a great trap set up for long tails if you decide to go for one, as I have taken many.

I'm curious to know what species you have trapped so far and what species you still have left. It sounds like a cool goal and should be neat to have every furbearer mounted. Have any pictures?

Longtails brown summer , white in winter. When trapping in end of October you can catch longtails that are brown and white coloration like a holstien cow.

So far: Least weasel, short tail weasel, long tail weasel, otter, mink, fisher, marten, Striped Skunk, Spotted skunk (eastern), nutria, coon, red fox, grey fox, kit fox, swift fox, Black bear, possum, beaver, muskrat, coyote, wolverine, lynx, bobcat, red squirrel and badger.
To go: Wolf, mountain lion, ringtail, hooded skunk, hog nosed skunk, arctic fox, coati and if I get that far I will try and get a western spotted skunk. There's a few pics on my Facebook page. I try to not post too many catch pics as you never know where they will end up.
I have thought about WI. with a continuous open season and a reasonable non resident price it's the direction I'll probably head. Any help would be appreciated. Planning on a wolf trip late next winter.

what is the difference in a kit fox and a swift fox?

While some argue that they are the same species they do use different habitats and have different physical characteristics. I'm sure you know about the western areas of Kansas that have swift fox. Pool table top looking short grass prairie with yucca. The Swifts have much smaller ears than the Kits. The Kits ears are noticeably larger which shows that they live in a desert habitat so the larger ears can dissipate heat easier. I took my Swift fox in Kansas and my Kit fox in Nevada. In each state the physical characteristics stayed true for all captures.

I don't know other than add Missouri to your search and I'm the guy with the wolverine. Don't know if Facebook shows profile pic in search. I'm boring so don't get too excited.

heres one--we have a nice grey and good sized but i've worked on hundreds of greys from the finger lakes region/grape area and they all go on large red boards.always amazed me the difference in 60 miles.they can also usually be spotted by the purple anus.

Danny, Not here to argue just doing my thing. I go by The scientific names and my Bible. " Wild Furbearer Management and Conservation in North America".
