It's fine to be skeptical of the accuracy of the death figures. But you have to consider that the inaccuracies could just as easily be leaning in the other direction, where covid deaths are underreported. There is no way to prove or disprove it one way or the other right now. All we have is info coming from our media outlets of choice, and maybe insights from a friend of a friend kind of stuff.

We're all just trying to make sense out of the same unknowns here.

Instead of believing the media or people on here, you could check health sites out yourself.

For instance, I just looked at New York cities and they break their numbers down into confirmed from covid19 and suspected covid 19'
I was surprised that over 4k of their reported 12k are suspected. Site was updated 4-18.

Since Covid 19 deaths are reported the way they are, right or wrong. Does anybody wonder if the same is true with flu deaths. If someone that dies has underlying health issues but also has the flu, do they automatically say it was the flu that caused the death. I guess no one has ever needed or wanted to question the number of flu deaths each year.

I'd bet the same regarding the underlying issues.

And you seem right about people not caring about flu deaths.

I don't know about any other state, but here in Nebraska, the DHHS only counts influenza deaths where influenza is listed as the cause of death on the death certificate. The DHHS also notes that the number given is an underestimate of the actual number of flu deaths. As of 4-4-20, the DHHS said there were 42 influenza deaths and 19,100 positive cases of flu.
Nebraska flu stats

For comparison, the state has 24 Covid19 deaths and 1,205 confirmed cases of Covid19.

In other words, we've had 2x more deaths and 15x more cases of flu than we have of Covid19.

I agree they only count it as influenza when the death certificate says that, but the same people that are writing death certificates for influenza deaths are also writing death certificates for Covid 19 deaths. So are they using the same standards for both, I don't know why they wouldn't.

If a person has heart problems and influenza then dies, they may well say influenza was the main cause even though the person had heart problems. So since the same people are making the call with Covid 19, I'd think they'd use he same standards as they used when calling it influenza. The person has heart problems and Covid 19, they list cause of death as Covid 19.

A person has heart problems and influenza, dies, and they call it by influenza, I have no problem with that. The same is true of Covid 19. Heart problem may have killed this person next week, next month, or next year, but without the influenza or Covid 19, he probably wouldn't have died today.

The difference is we've never cared how they were reporting the influenza deaths, but now we care how they report these deaths.

My guess is the people who die are not going come back no matter how they score thier death. Seems this score keeping is necesary since we have no sports scores to watch.

I'm hunkered down. Hunkered down at the Charlotte airport. In a few hours I'll be hunkered down at the Phoenix airport. Then hunkering down at Seattle airport..Then on to Fairbanks to hunker down at home after I fill out my hunker down paperwork at the Fairbanks airport.
