On April 21, 1836, the outnumbered and outgunned Texans defeated the better-trained Mexican Army under the command of General Antonio López de Santa Anna at San Jacinto. Independence, which had been formally declared on March 2, was achieved. Approximately 650 Mexican soldiers were killed, compared to only 11 Texans. The battle lasted a full 18 minutes.

Remember the Alamo was the battle cry.
Its a shame Fannin never went to the aid of the Alamo(a wagon wheel broke when he started out and he canceled the rescue mission).He surrendered to the Mexicans at Goliad and all 400 of his troops were executed.Except for a few that were able to escape when the executions started.
At San Jacinto,Santa Anna was taken by surprise and captured the next day.

And I believed he was spared and eventually went back to Mexico.

He went back and continued to run Mexico until 1845 when he got into a war with the United States--that didn't go his way either and more of Mexico became parts of the U.S.
Santa Anna was a hard learner.

And another bunch were saved by the Angel of Goliad - a Mexican woman. Google her as quite a story. I was there 3 months ago and save the memorial to her. She came north with a Mexican officer at the time. She eventually dumped him and stayed on in Texas and has many descendants there today.

I have one thing on my bucket list---Visit the Alamo before I die.

Any you older folks remember watching Fess Parker as Davy Crockett fighting at the Alamo on Disney back in about 1955?

As a native Tennessean the Alamo has always held a certain amount of respect and admiration for everyone who fought there, including a sizable contingent from the Volunteer state.

Good luck when you visit the Alamo not much of it left and in the middle of the city. It surprised me there was not a lot of artifacts or much of a museum 1 hr. visit your done

Grandpa--I have to find the picture of 4 of us little cousins all wearing our Davy crocket outfits after watching Fes and his partner--georgie Russel. That show started my 60 plus year of studying the Alamo.
Danvee,I am well aware that the chapel and Long barracks are pretty much all that is left.The Alamo of 1836 with all its buildings and walls covered 3 acres--that made it that much harder for 185 men to defend it.

I remember coon skin hats became popular when that mini series was made. Still have the theme song in my head.

Seen that movie when I was just a kid. When they had Friday night movies at school. Had the 45 record of the Davy Crockett song too. Still remember the record was yellow. Listened to it all the time.

Diggerman,I won't need a Texican to make me feel as if entering the Alamo is a church. My guess is my eyes will be more than wet. What those men did was unbelievable,knowing that they weren't going to get any help.They stayed knowing they were going to die. Those 185 men took over 600 of Santa Annas men with them.
The final battle was over in an hour and a half.
The final battle started at 5 am,the defenders were able to hold off the first 2 attacks but not the 3rd one.
