A small town due west of me about 12 miles got hammered by a tornado about 1700 hours yesterday evening. The tornado was over a mile wide and it did some kind of bad stuff to Onalaska. It stayed on the ground for over 100 miles. Same system also kicked them up in La. Ms. Al. and Ga. I hope our TMan family and friends are ok in all of the affected areas. [Linked Image]

Can someone flip this picture around

Also Ok. got it pretty bad too. Not sure about other states that got hit. I think maybe Western Missouri. You folks hang in there and lets keep all of those who lost everything or anything in our prayers.

I am east bound day after tomorrow. If your claims adjuster looks like he hasn't had a boys hair cut for while cut him some slack. He is old, hasn't been to the barber for a while, and probably sweats too much.

In the meantime, I will pray for everyone affected.

When they get that big and stay on the ground that long, total devastation is usually the result. Stay safe.

My niece lives in Onalaska and called us just a few minutes afterwards to let us know that she was OK, in case we heard it on the news. Tree on her front porch and she was going to take in her 80+yo neighbor because his place was totaled but he was unhurt. Talked about the other residents not knowing how to react to the warning sirens, apparently they don't test them much.

These are NOT pictures from the latest tornado that this tread is about but they do show close up how devastating both large and small tornados are to a residential grade structure. Very few buildings can stand and F2- almost nothing escapes and F3 or worse

I have pictures from Norman Ok, Joplin Mo, and Greensburg Ks on another hard drive- they were much much worse than the photos above

The thing that amazed me in the Joplin storm was mature trees having all the bark striped off trunks and limbs and still standing. I've seen a lot of wind damage over the years but that was a first. Another remarkable thing there was old wood frame houses still standing apparently mostly intact while masonry buildings next to them were torn completely apart.

Greens burg was like that a couple yrs before. The structures were flat and the tree trunks were bare of leaves, limbs, and even bark.

Those two particular storms were not only powerful but also wide and hit population centers which is of course worst case scenarios. My farthest north claim from the Greensburg storm was at the Broken Bow High school (From southern KS to North Central NE is at least 350 miles- maybe close to 400)
