WD 40 will work but tends to soak in to some stones fairly quick,Watered down dishsoap is good.3 in 1 oil is a bit thick, but you can thin it with a bit of kerosene and it will work.
Anything that will float away the particles and keep the stone clean and not clog up.
Keep your stones dressed regularly so they dont get dished. A cheap flat diamond steel from the dollar store is good to dress your stones.Use water when dressing the stones.

I dont think you want to keep em in water if thats what you mean, it could damage them. Only store waterstones in water.

If you have like a good arkansas stone wd 40 will be ok.Just keep it wet.
If you have one of those synthetic stones the wd 40 will soak right in like a sponge.

I use kerosene from a small jar (a yeast jar actually) and put it on the stone with an eyedropper. Whatever you use needs to be thin but float the fines. WD40 works good too but is expensive in comparison and gets messy from a spray can.

Cheapest most available oil is diesel. But I prefer soapy water, I always end up with a cleaner stone. 5 or 10 weight motor oil or machine works better than WD40 because WD40 is really too light to carry much slop off, and just carries the superfines deeper into the stone.

I use 3 in 1 oil on a Norton India stone for my woodworking tools. Mostly use a carborundum and water on my knives.

Don't use WD40. That stuff evaporates and leaves a wax like residue on and in the stone. The last thing one needs is sticky stuff on a sharpening stone.

The tri-stone I bought a couple years ago came with mineral oil. Works good.
