This is the same advice everyone always gives. The obvious thing that no one mentions that took me a minute to catch on to was...
You have to buy special 3 way switches. The special switches have an extra terminal for the extra wire the guys are talking about that you need. Ohhhhhh. Duh. (thats me that day.)
The extra wire and the extra terminal are called the "traveler". It makes sure there is power at both switches so that when you close the switch there is power available to run up to the light.
However, if you are accurate in your description and you are actually popping breakers. You have your wires connected wrong or you accidentally shorted your wire somehow.
Using the wrong switches and not having a traveler wire wouldn't pop a breaker... it just wouldn't work. Popping a breaker means you got a black wire tied to a white wire or bare wire somewhere by accident. Either via the terminals you connected wrong or a staple through the wire or a connector through the switch box tore through the covering or something. Sometimes it just the ground wire gets pushed up against a terminal after you shove it in the box.
Probably doesn't matter b/c you have to pull new wire between the switches anyway b/c you need the extra wire. And you need to replace both switches. If you are still popping breakers after that look for the short.
Be easier to just eliminate one of your switches and just have the one switch in the chicken house like everyone else.
