Please stay safe out there everyone, make sure to identify your target and what is in front of and beyond it. If a hunter approaches you while hunting, don’t move, speak in a loud clear voice that a hunter is there.

Hunters, ages 7 and 20, recovering after being mistaken for turkeys, shot.

A 7-year-old and his 20-year-old brother are recovering after being shot in a hunting accident on Tuesday, police with West Virginia’s Division of Natural Resources (DNR) confirmed.

Happens a lot in turkey season but more so in the fall. At least here in PA, spring is for gobblers only with at least a 3" beard so you are going to wait and identify the target. Fall is any bird which is when most of the accidents happen with morons shooting at sounds and such. I don't know what the season and laws are in WV.

Turkey hunting is the most dangerous as far as the risk of being shot. I remember being taught that in hunter ed when I was 12. For the same reasons I just mentioned.

Just about anyone can "hunt". The trouble is most don't know what the heck they are doing. At least from what I have witnessed in my 52 years.

Still teach that, just like Bruce said above, let them come to you, don’t stalk them. If you hear one, move towards him then set up and let it come to you.

That is one of the reasons I really don’t agree with those fans people are using now to sneak up on turkeys. I guess if you want to risk it on private land that is your right to do if legal and you can be absolutely sure no one else is on that property, but please never do that on public land.

I love turkey hunting, but hunting in full camo, using max heavy loads, add an anxious hunter and it can get dangerous.

Some of the best turkey calling I ever heard came from a person the worst calling came from a turkey so never go after what you cannot see.

I was hunting with a guy this year, we heard a perfect hen calling back to us every time we called, ten seconds later she would call, she wasn’t moving. We were set up on public land weren’t hearing any gobblers. We heard the hen coming from private property and both thought it was a hunter. We got in the truck and drove down the road next to where we thought it was coming from. Sitting right there was a decoy and another hunter right by the woods next to the public land.

If we weren’t experienced enough to know a perfect call not moving is likely a hunter, we may have tried to sneak in and could have been in the news also.

Some guys think if you get close to hens you might bring in a Tom. I’m not sure why anyone would do it really. I was just saying it because if we were first time guys in the woods and moved in we could have been shot maybe.

I personally, know no one who would move in on a hen call.

Doesn’t really make sense to me now that I say it out loud again.

I don't know why anyone would try to stalk a turkey to begin with. Sure it can be done but the chances of them seeing you are pretty darn good. They have beyond keen eyesight. You're way better off just sitting and calling them to you.

I was shot in archery season before. During the overlap between archery and Squirrel way back in the 80's. I got peppered in the shoulder. Luckily, he was far enough away that it only made a bunch of welts. I was in my tree stand. After the shot, I yelled and he ran like heck. Never came to see if I was OK. Probably a city slicker.

To be fair. Sitting on the ground in full camo behind a life like spread of decoys many of which move in a slight breeze an look reall even up close Seems like a bad combination from the start.

Yet we still have the freedom of choices for now anyway. With freedom comes also the ability to make poor choices. I wouldn't expect those that have not experienced freedom to understand. Shouldn't you be collecting your guns to turn in or something?
