Took the dog for a walk in the woods this afternoon and came across this egg sitting on a rotten log. The egg was cold so I know it won't hatch but how in the world did it get there?

Laid there or carried by a raccoon are the 2 most likely reasons.

That had crossed my mind since it was close to water but why didn't he eat it?

Sit on your horse on top of a ridge, look out across the country and tell me there is no God.

I have an egg dump for eggs that don't hatch when I set them. I throw out huge amounts of eggs.. Raccoons, fox and coyotes eat some eggs at the dump and stash other eggs all over the place up to at least as far as 1 mile away. The fox and coyotes mostly bury the eggs with the top frequently flush with the ground. Lots of eggs are just left randomly in the open. I find lots of intact eggs within a few hundred yards, in all directions from the dump.

I'ts possible the raccoon ate its fill at the nest and then carried off the other eggs.

I should put a trail camera on my egg dump.

Keith

That's kind of neat
Had no idea they could carry and stockpile unbroken eggs

Came across three more eggs of the same size today on a field road. No way it was a nest and again they looked like they had been moved there. I'm guessing they are pheasant eggs and the culprits are raccoons

Did you crack any of the eggs to see the size of any embryo?

no I didn't. Maybe I'll do that tomorrow if they're still there.
