Here's some pics from my dad and his family hunting out in CO in the 60's.

My dad and his uncle. The big buck second from left is my dad's biggest he ever shot.
[Linked Image]

Camp for the season.
[Linked Image]

A successful season. The man on the far right is my mom's uncle (from WI).
[Linked Image]

The ATV of the day. A 1947 Willys, with a flathead 8 instead of the stock inline 4.
[Linked Image]

Packed up to head out. The tongue on the left hand trailer broke on the trip out and my dad's buck had 1 tine broken.
He found the tine and I mounted the rack on a plaque for his 60th birthday.

Can you provide info on the 2 vehicles in the last pic? Family cars used for towing! Great pics.

Wow those are awesome pictures! Check out the racks on those things and the wheels they were pulling the meat wagons with!

I'll have to ask my dad about them. They were definitely family cars. Uncle was a buick salesman, so good chance the left one might be.

The car on the left is a 1958 Pontiac

The other one looks almost like a 1957 Edsel station wagon but the taillights aren't right as I remember them. I am pretty sure it is a 1958 Ford station wagon

The late 50's and early 60's were the zenith of mule deer hunting in the west. My dad and his 5 brothers all talked about how many deer there were at the time. Big deer. Everyone got a deer if they hunted at all. Usually my dad and his brothers killed nothing smaller than a 4x4 and then just discarded the antlers. One of my uncles killed the 2nd largest deer in the state one year --44" wide and 9x11. Amazing.

Why did the mule deer decline? Lots of theories and ideas. I believe the deer in Nevada and Utah suffered from the affects of radio active fallout in the 50's and 60's. Who knows?

One interesting point about your photos. Notice the waistline of every person in the photos. Not much extra weight being carried around by people in those days. Our diet has changed a lot, and not for the better.

Cars back then were much cooler than nowadays.

For all the years I knew him, grandpa drove an early 70s camper special chevy and grandma drove a buick electra 225.

Great pictures K Snow My dad says the same thing about hunting vehicles . . . always some one's Pontiac or an old Jeep. Nobody in those days had a pickup it seemed.

Here's that deer my uncle killed.

That's a monster Lazarus. Wow.

My dad never remembers a non-typical getting shot.

He said you just sat on a hill watching the other hill and waited for one you liked to walk down.

That's exactly how my dad describes it. Like you sorted through all the smaller bucks until the one that you liked finally showed up. When I show my dad how far I have to hike these days to find a deer, he just laughs. He can't understand it.

Good night Laz- what a beast.
K Snow, it doesn't look like your grandma traded cars every 3 yrs now does it? She has obviously aged a lot between the two Pontiac pictures but it is just as shiny in the 2nd pic as it was in the front
