I'd say any log splitter the kids can use is a good one!

I have a buddy that bought a champion log splitter a couple years ago and he loves it I think it was around $1000

The bitterness of poor quality last a lot longer than the sweetness of low price

Fiskars makes a nice one. Only weighs about 4 pounds splits logs as fast as you can hit em.

Let's go Brandon

20 ton and up smaller ones are usually pretty cheaply made. Motor is the important part, get one with a motor that has a name you can recognize and get replacement parts. Pumps and valves are low maintenance.

Mine is 8 lbs. I think its made by collins and I haven't broke it yet after about 40 cords. In all seriousness, 90% of the wood I split is quicker using a maul. Sometimes I get into wood that has twisted grain and I wonder about a splitter

I have a Speeco 22 ton vertical / horizontal splitter. Have had it for about 5 years no problems. I split about 5 cords of hardwood a year. It has a 6.75 hp Briggs engine and has been trouble free. Only downfall is it's near impossible to drain engine oil without sucking it out or removing mounting bolts.I paid
1000 for it at Blaines Farm and Fleet. The only one I could find online now is 1400.

Now's the time to be looking for a used one now that winter is winding down. What kind of wood are you splitting? I'd say 22 Ton for sure. 30 for big tough stuff.

Life ain't supposed to be easy.

I have a 22 ton, cant remember the brand. I bought it new about 10 years ago from TSC. No complaints at all. Haven't found anything it wont split. In fact I think at the time they had a deal going on, if you brought them a chunk of wood that you can lift onto the splitter and it wouldn't split it, the gave some prize out. The manager said they never gave out any prizes. Many people tried, but couldn't get it to stop. The older I get the more I think about the size of logs I want to deal with. When I was younger I would take a log that a 32" bar wouldn't get through and cut down to manageable sizes. Now a days I wont mess with those. LOL

Dirty Hand Tools 27 ton although the 22 would likely be fine

in March 2014 when the wife went back to work it was the first thing I bought.

been good , did have a problem , the earlier design had the feed hose hanging low , I hit a rut and it busted and I called to order the hose , they warrantied it sent me a new pump with the right angle so it shouldn't happen again , I was in the last days of my warranty when this happened.

it has been a good machine , cost was 1449.99 at my local independent dealer the same price as online and mine came all assembled.

the company is out of Colorodo and has very nice customer service and easy to order filters or other parts if you do need them.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Five years ago if you'd told me I'd be interested in this type thread I'd have said you were nuts. Truth is , my body has mutinied on me big-time. I used to poo poo at guys and their hydraulic gadgets. I own a good indestructible. Pipe-handled maul that has hundreds of cord of hardwoods under it's belt. Because of my lungs,, I am now a candyass that can't split squat by hand, at least not without staggering like Frankenstein's monster and feeling that I'm close to passing out! Mmmmmm, hydraulics goooooood, me look, mmmmmmmm, me buy.........

I bought one of those last year, very happy with it. Have probably split around 20 cords so far with zero problems, tons of power. Think I paid 1200 on sale but could of been a touch over.

I have a 27ton that is branded 'Toro', but in all likelihood is made by MTD. 27 is fine for 97% of the stuff I need to split but there's been times I wish it was bigger, like when splitting gum (one could argue that gum doesn't actually split - it more or less mashes it so nasty). The one thing I love about this splitter is the Honda motor it came with. Starts in 1-2 pulls season after season. I got it in 2006 and I'l probably split 30 cords with it.

TSC carries the country tough brand. I have had a 35 ton model for about 10 years now and love the thing for stringy types of wood and big hedge. Everything else gets busted with an 8 pound Collins.
I sure wish our local TSC would have had a prize giveaway. I have seen many twisted chunks of hedge (osage orange) over the years that would not bust with a 35 ton splitter. It don't happen often, but there are chunks that can't be busted with the splitter alone.

27 ton from Home Depot, Troybuilt. It's about 15/20 years old. Replaced the hydraulic valve a couple years ago. That thing will cut a log in half sideways. (But the pull string springs wear out every few years).

I'm looking at the Champion 27 ton at home depot right now. It will also go vertical which is nice I have some huge rounds that I had to move with a skid loader. It has good reviews and all the videos I watched on youtube about it, the people really liked it. It's about $1000

A lot depends on what wood types your splitting and how big the rounds are. Here it’s 30-35 ton to split the elm and some Russian olive that stuff I tough.

Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!
