I order me a metal detector off amazon a few weeks back, well it finally came in and with the rain and work i got it out for the first time this afternoon. I have a lot to learn with it, i bought a Garrett ace 400. Went out with the squirrel dog i ended up digging up 4 old cans and 1 spent shotgun shell. Lol i can't retire YET!! I do need to learn more on pin pointing don't believe you need to dig a 2 foot radius hole to find what your looking for.. i took it out be hind my house, about 30 years ago we had a tornado went through my thinking stuff including junk would be everywhere. Nothing special in finding today and no squirrels treed, but it got the dog out before season coming up in a few weeks and i did get a good walk in . What are some of your favorite treasures you have found, and ill take any advice you veterans have out there if you like to share.

2012 I found 4 gold rings, one was men’s large class ring. They paid for the detector. Nothing exiting except coins and junk since then. Little league ball diamonds good place to learn, usually find a few coins there. Home plate is a hot spot.

Biggest tip I can give you is spend as much time using your machine as you possibly can. And dig every signal you swing over that way you learn the sounds and VDI number of different items. Search youtube for videos on how to use the pinpoint function on your detector it will help cut the size of the plug you dig.

Also if you didnt buy a pinpointer I would buy one as soon as you can afford one. The Garrett propointer or propointr AT are good options. Minelab also has a good pinpointer.

Best find so far is a Coalfield Company Coal Scrip from the days when the mines paid there workers with coins that could only be used at the company owned store.

I don't but good friend does.
He finds lots of old coins & civil war stuff. But he does tons of research like the guys looking for sunken ships. He has old maps of where farmhouses stood in the 1800s. He stays away from old taverns, that I thought would be good; but pull tabs & bottle caps mess you up.
His holy grail is to locate an intact Ball Glass jar, buried by depression farmers. Old fair grounds & racetracks are good too!

He's found rings & returned some of them. Does really well on old beaches also = easy digging.
Another interesting thing is an old outhouse on the old farm. When they moved them, they filled the old hole with trash.
Lots of intact old medicine & other bottles.

Don't forget to check the hole again, after taking a metal item out. Often there are multiple metal items buried together.

Good luck.

Keith

Good deal then your all set. Just keep swinging and you will have it down. I still miss on the pinpoint with the detector fairly regularly still myself.

Another thing is always check back on spots you have previously dug, because there is always something left.
