The old varieties of Red Delicious were good. The new ones are almost inedible. I like Golden Delicious, Honeycrisp, and Fuji in that order. The locally grown Golden Ds are sweet, crisp, and juicy. I would suspect the grocery store ones are pretty poor.

Golden Delicious after it has hung on the tree through a few frosts.

Red delicious if you can get them fresh. By far the best eating apple but few people have ever had one that wasn't ruined on the way to a store.

Whinesap. A neighbor had one in their horse pasture when I was a kid. That tree must have liked the natural fertilizer because those apples were so big you couldn't hardly bite them without bloodying up your mouth. I had always thought that the red streaks were my blood.

I had 40 acres of red delicious behind my house for 15 years. Not once did I ever finish eating one even fresh picked off the tree. Grainy and bland. YUCK!

Pristine is a great late summer apple and end up the season with Goldrush and Pink Lady.

Sorry BernieB, but I will have to agree with Michigan on this one. Won't even argue about it.
There is a good reason they are cutting them all down in Washington and replacing them with better apples.

I have always thought that "delicious" in the name was a true misnomer for red delicious apples. They are barely edible.

Red delicious is a misnomer, they are the least "apple" tasting apple there is. Bland, bland, bland and too mushy for a decent pie too.
I'm a Fuji fan, and gala a close second.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

I've tried honeycrisp. They're OK, but IMO, very over priced compared to other apples I like just as well. Pink Lady (my favorite) is comparable, but almost half the price in my area.

I don't care how nice the hand soap smells, you should never walk out of the restroom sniffing your fingers.
