OK, I am looking to get something new for my range. I currently have two 6 paddle trees for rimfire, but am looking to get a couple of trees for centerfire rounds. One will be set up at 15 or 30 yards for pistol and the other at longer range for rifle. I have found a kit with 8 paddles that I could make two 4 paddle trees with. The kit comes with either AR500 or AR550 steel plates. Does anyone know how the 550 compares to the 500? I have many AR500 plates that seem to hold up well, just wandering if the extra $60 would be worth going with AR550 on the trees. I am sure the pistol tree would be fine with the AR500 steel plates as even mild steel holds up fairly well with most pistol rounds, but the repeated abuse of 556 rounds on a dueling tree for rifles is what I am concerned with.
Thank you in advance, figured someone on here would have some experience with the AR550 steel.

I know ar500 can not take 5.56 from less than 100 yards repeatedly

it dimples, bends , craters and craters send fragments back at you.

550 is supposed to be the next best thing from what I have heard although I have no experience with steel. However, .556 is a very fast round that has great penetration. For the AR tree, I would probably go with the 550. Pay once and cry once as they say.

I am building one now. Had a choice between 3/8" thick AR500 paddles or 1/2" AR500 paddles. Went with the 1/2" and will mostly use it at 100 plus yards with rifle cartridges or pistol carbines.

I would like to hear more about this. How thick was the plate, was it swinging or solid, actual distance, and if you was using AP rounds. Also if your steel came from a reputable resource.
I only ask as my experience with the ar500 is totally different, and I am guessing a variable exists.
I now have hanging ar500 gongs of various sizes and a couple spinners at 45, 60, 100, 150, 200, and 300 yards. The ones at 45 have only taken a few hits from 223/556(like a hundred or so from the kids), my 60 yard plates take quite a few rounds from myself and buddies (in the thousands of rounds on the original plate). The 45 yard plate dose have a few dings, not craters just enough of a ding to know a hit was made in that spot. The 60 yard original has the same dings. I would say these dings are same diameter as the dimples on a golf ball and maybe 1/3 the depth of the ball dimples. My plates are all 3/8 or 1/2 inch thickness. The originals are 3/8 and newer ones 1/2 inch thick plates.

I would have a Canadian look up the specs, convert it to jules, then look at their proposed new gun bans and see what calibers will exceed each bullet traps Max back stop capability

we had 3/8 plates at 50 and 100 yards at the range the 100 held up well the 50 didn't.

I was told they were AR500 but I don't know where the steel came from

I don't know what all was being used for ammo we added a magnet to the range instructing people to check ammo before shooting pates.

this is a private range but no range officer is present we just let our selves in the gate shoot clean up and leave.

if you think of plates as a disposable target they last a very long time but a few years of club use was what we were getting before being replaced

but having been struck by bullet fragments from shooting bad steel before I understood why not to I don't need any more scars.

every manufacture of steel targets I have seen warns about shooing with rifles closer than 100 yards or magnum rifles less than 200 yards

the 50 yard was taking more abuse and warping faster dimpling more and cracked

Well Leftlane, as much as I hate to see our brethren to the north suffer from libtardism, I am just trying to find the best option for my enjoyment of our rights. I will say a prayer for those that are suffering to the north and also pray that we can have the rest of our rights reinstated to shall not be infringed at some point. Though the infringements we have on our own rights are nothing compared to those of our northern brethren, they are still infringements non the less.
