I know ar500 can not take 5.56 from less than 100 yards repeatedly
it dimples, bends , craters and craters send fragments back at you.

550 is supposed to be the next best thing from what I have heard although I have no experience with steel. However, .556 is a very fast round that has great penetration. For the AR tree, I would probably go with the 550. Pay once and cry once as they say.

I know ar500 can not take 5.56 from less than 100 yards repeatedly it dimples, bends , craters and craters send fragments back at you. I would like to hear more about this. How thick was the plate, was it swinging or solid, actual distance, and if you was using AP rounds. Also if your steel came from a reputable resource. I only ask as my experience with the ar500 is totally different, and I am guessing a variable exists. I now have hanging ar500 gongs of various sizes and a couple spinners at 45, 60, 100, 150, 200, and 300 yards. The ones at 45 have only taken a few hits from 223/556(like a hundred or so from the kids), my 60 yard plates take quite a few rounds from myself and buddies (in the thousands of rounds on the original plate). The 45 yard plate dose have a few dings, not craters just enough of a ding to know a hit was made in that spot. The 60 yard original has the same dings. I would say these dings are same diameter as the dimples on a golf ball and maybe 1/3 the depth of the ball dimples. My plates are all 3/8 or 1/2 inch thickness. The originals are 3/8 and newer ones 1/2 inch thick plates.

I would have a Canadian look up the specs, convert it to jules, then look at their proposed new gun bans and see what calibers will exceed each bullet traps Max back stop capability

The originals are 3/8 and newer ones 1/2 inch thick plates. we had 3/8 plates at 50 and 100 yards at the range the 100 held up well the 50 didn't. I was told they were AR500 but I don't know where the steel came from I don't know what all was being used for ammo we added a magnet to the range instructing people to check ammo before shooting pates. this is a private range but no range officer is present we just let our selves in the gate shoot clean up and leave. if you think of plates as a disposable target they last a very long time but a few years of club use was what we were getting before being replaced but having been struck by bullet fragments from shooting bad steel before I understood why not to I don't need any more scars. every manufacture of steel targets I have seen warns about shooing with rifles closer than 100 yards or magnum rifles less than 200 yardsthe 50 yard was taking more abuse and warping faster dimpling more and cracked
