My son has one he bought several years ago, it's the basic GI 1911. That pistol has been one of the best purchases ever. I have a Springfield Armory Inc. GI model and the Rock Island is just as good if not better and at half the price at the time when he bought it. The Rock Island has a great trigger and in my opinion is the best buy out there for a 1911. If you're wanting a good basic 1911 you can't go wrong with the Rock Island. Nothing at all bad to say about it.

Designed and manufactured in the Philippines. $400. That's interesting.

I thought John Moses Browning designed it?

In my opinion the 1911 is the best semi automatic pistol ever made. Gun manufacturers have had over a hundred years to come up with something better, but have failed in my eyes. All 1911s are not created equal, but as long as it is 1911 it is a good pistol.

I buy a gun according to what they will be used for. If you want to compete and be competitive, you have to break out your big checkbook. For ammo too. If you want to be able to defend your self when your in a part of town you wouldn't be in if you could get out of it, you don't need a 450 dollar barrel. You need to be able to hit a clay pigeon at 20 feet reliably and quickly. A gun built from the same blueprint as a tried and true military weapon will certainly do that.

The fact that old blackpowder civil war revolvers in 44-45 caliber were shooting about the same weight and velocity as john brownings gun, should convince you it works. Why fix what aint broke?

Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

Tom,

Those Rock Island 1911s are quite a nice gun for the money. I’ve got a couple of them for truck guns and have run quite a few rounds through them over the years. Feeds Winchester white box flawlessly. Fit and finish isnt Colt or Kimber, but neither is the price tag.

Allegedly this is Colt tooling (at least it was many years ago). I have a number of 1911s and a few high end models and really like the Rock Island.

Back in my race gun building days, the Springfield was the best base to start on, BUT nowadays neither the RI or Spgfd don't need any tweaking to be top notch side arm for daily use.

I don't have a 1911 Rock island but have other RIA Rock Island Armory Armscor product.

I did have a problem with it , they base their US customer service in NV and they were good to work with they replaced the gun under warranty.

you ship to NV and they ship back to you , turn around with shipping both directions was 1 month total seemed reasonable.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

MB 750, I have a Rock Island .45 tactical II operator. The VZ grips are really good feeling grips. My gun is probably the most accurate pistol that I have bought. It has fed everything that I have put through it. In my opinion you can't go wrong with one. I only carry mine occasionally when moving around in black bear country.

I bought one for around $350. I can pop chipmunks at 20 yards no problem. Love it.
