This may have already been posted and I missed it - anyone else receive one of these? My mother passed away last November and I received one for her today with "deceased" next to her name and my name and address under hers. I am the executor of her estate and initiated the EIN # for the estate back when she passed so the IRS had her status, my mailing address, etc. I filed her final tax return back in February. Not sure why they would send If it says "deceased" on the check unless it goes into the estate? My attorney is out for the covid fire drill so will have to wait for now. It's good for a year so it's on the bulletin board till I figure out what to do with it - just wondering if this happened to anyone else here.

Maybe when they vote in November, they'll make a $1200 donation to the Democrat party?

Yup deerhunter,

My sister, as executor of my mother's estate,
recently got one marked deceased with mother's name
and my sister's address underneath.

She's not sure what to do with it, either.

I told her to either deposit into the family trust account,
and see what happens or just hold onto it until she
gets some better legal opinion.

If she deposits it, she may end up having to pay it back
and could be responsible to interest on the $1,200.00

I would suggest that you return it. Since the IRS had to process so many checks in such a short period of time, there were a lot of mistakes. Although you would think it would be a simple matter to code a computer to kick out any person's name that had "deceased" by it, apparently it isn't as simple as I'm thinking it is. Anyway, if you want to read up on the ins and outs, here you go.

That's what I was thinking too - having to pay the interest and whatever else they tack on if it's not meant to be cashed. IRS sure was quick to take back her remaining SS payment for the month after she died, hard to believe they would give out money unintentionally (insert laughter)...

Thanks Lazarus, I'll check out the link.

When our Dad died, my Sister did all the paperwork, since she works for the County Attorney. The bean counters even inquired about any money that may have been in his wallet.

Well, I'm not here to defend the IRS, but the Service does deal all the time in a similar, but slightly more complicated area known as IRD. Income in respect of a Decedent. The BASIC idea is that a person earns income, but dies before that income is to be paid to the Decedent, that is income in respect of a Decedent. Examples are things like retirement plan payments, IRA distributions, unpaid interest, salary, wages and commissions. Since IRD is counted toward the Decedent's estate for purposes of federal estate tax, the Service tends (in some people's opinions) to get a bit creative when it comes to categorizing IRD. So it may be that some in the Service just figured these types of payments were in the same category as IRD. Who knows?

My step mother just got a stimulus check, in her name only, but for $2400,and my Dad died it late 2018. She called H&R Block and was told the amount was based on 2018 income and returns, and that she is entitled to it. It also says on the envelope the checks come in, if the person who's name is on the check is deceased, to check that box and return the check. My wifes best friend lost her husband last year and also received a $2400 check, and was told the same thing by her tax folks. I'd consult your tax prep folks.

I got one for my mother that died last August. My name was on it to. I made a copy of her death certificate and wrote a short note stating that where she was she had no use for the money and sent it back.

All that fuss, and then they give money hand over fist to non-citizens. ARGH.
A telemarketer called my Dad, asking to talk to my Mom. He said sure.........and laid the phone receiver down on her urn of ashes.

My Mom got a check for $2400 as well. My Dad died last year. Mom's in a nursing home so I got the check but I haven't cashed it yet but was wondering what to do. I got Mom's taxes done at H&R so I guess I'll ask them about it.

I called HR Block today. They said to cash the check but I need to send half back to the IRS. They gave me an address in Kansas City to send it to and they said to put a note with it to tell them why. Calling the IRS isn't a bad idea either.

I tried calling the IRS and got a message saying their call centers were closed due to the virus phobia. I’m just going to sit on it for a bit and see what shakes out. If it ends up being payable to the estate I won’t feel bad using it towards her final expenses - if big brother wants it back so be it.
