Hello!
I'm planning out a fur shed and I sort of have two options.
Option A - a non insulated barn with a dirt floor
Option B - My basement
The barn would be a lot more expensive to heat and to turn into a fur shed.
The basement would be great except, well, it's my BASEMENT. So I'm assuming I'd have some pretty nasty smells especially if I'm working with skunks.
What are your thoughts, would you recommend fixing up the barn, or would you recommend turning my basement into a furshed?

From experience, go with the basement

A lot will depend on who else lives in the house with you. If you live alone, basement will be fine. As long as it doesn’t have a moisture problem.
If other people live in the house with you, do what PineD suggested. Fix up A room in the barn. That way you don’t have to heat the entire barn. FYI, the barn is about 12x22.

you just have to think about keeping heating the barn, and with the dirt floor dampness, will mold and mildew your furs... or lots of ventilation in the barn...lots of furs been done for years and years in sheds... just a matter of space and costs

Turn that barn into a fur shed don’t ruin your house.

You could easily frame in a part of the barn, floor as well, and insulate it. Warm and kozy. Keep the wife happy too. It's easy to keep a she-male happy.
Life ain't supposed to be easy.

Use both. Skin and flesh in the barn. Board em and dry em in the basement. Don’t have to heat the barn the whole time, just while your out there working. Good thinking, I wasn't thinking of the skinnng part...lol

What's the access to the basement? No outside access is no bueno. You can get creative with the ventilation to keep smells out of the rest of the house of you have to go that route.
Just wouldn't do it if you're have to drag stuff hrough the house to get to the basement.

Walk into a fur buyers place some time and you won’t be working in your house much. 1st year I’d put in a barrel stove in the barn and see how that goes for a season.

Depends on how much you catch. A couple dozen animals doesn't really stink anything up to be noticeable. Skunk and mink should be skinned outside. Everyone in the house will know u nicked a gland in about 20 seconds (speaking from experience).
I dried a couple hundred coon skins in the basement of my house a couple years. They don't really have that much of a stink.
