MURDER HORNET update - As a beekeeper and instructor for the Oregon State Univ. Master beekeeping program I'm getting a lot of questions about the "Murder" hornet. I just came from a webinar last night with OSU's Master beekeepers so I thought I'd pass along an update.
The Asian Giant hornet (the name Murder Hornet is a media invention) was first discovered on Vancouver Island early last winter. Further investigation turned up one colony near Blaine Washington last December. Both of these colonies were eradicated. No other colonies were found. AND NO NEW COLONIES HAVE BEEN FOUND SINCE THEN.
No one knows why the media got all over this and hyped it the way they did. It's a huge bee - 2 inches for the queen and an inch and a half for workers - so it's quite an impressive critter to make a splash in the news, but there have been no discoveries of new colonies.
The Asian Giant hornet is a threat to honey bees so a lot of monitoring is taking place this spring in the state of Washington. No Asian Giant hornets have been found in Oregon. The expectation is that it will not become established here in the U.S. and careful monitoring will take place all year. For right now, this is largely media hype and you can all but ignore the things you are hearing unless you happen to be interested in doing research on this species.

Im prepared for a busy murder hornet trapping season. Plan on using a honeybee paste bait and phenomenons. Leaning towards a dirt hole set also with very fine bedding.
