Way overthinking. Rats and mink make a living going in and out tile. Black plastic, galvanized steel, rusted, all shapes and sizes.

I have made and used colony traps since the early 1970s... I have never painted one. In a couple of years they will get a coating surface rust and that is fine. doesn't hurt and don't think it really helps. I have made hundreds of them and prefer using the folded one ones that I make. They are easy to make, easier to store and a lot easier to carry, if you are walking. No paint or coating needed.
