I ate frog legs a couple of times as a kid when we would catch 6 or 8 of them. Didn't think they tasted too bad back then. Me and the kids caught and cleaned a dozen or so a couple of years ago and man were they bad. Two of my kids thought they were OK but I thought they smelled and tasted too fishy for me. Wife explained there wasn't any need to cook them in her house again since she hates fish and the smell of them... Not sure why i thought they were ok 30 years ago and think they are bad now...

Can't gig em anymore in Nebraska. Got a 4 inch minimum size limit here, so the smaller ones have to be released unharmed.

Back in the day I caught them on hook and line. These came out of the pond in the back and were a 1970 limit of Oklahoma frogs.

It's been awhile since I have been but took my daughter out gigging for her first time the other night we got 21. Then while skinning them we decided to learn what frogs eat, I was very Surprised to see snakes and turtles in there stomachs. We started out trying to get them to bite a crappie jig but ended up just gigging them all. I videoed the hole deal and it made a nice video. We hit 8 ponds but only got frogs out of 3. Over half came from one pond.

Been a long time since I went. But did plenty when younger. I loved it because it was dark and we got to wade the creeks... and also because my pop let me smoke a cigar for skeeters. We usually barehanded them. At the end you could put the dinks back to grow and seed next time. We cleaned that night and soaked in salt water and battered and fried em the next day. Sadly there not around the creeks like before. Now days folks get permish from golf courses and come out with sack fulls. But it ain’t as fun as the creeks. Nothing will put the fear of the night in you like a school of carp swimming into you in the pitch black in water up to your chin.

Around 1980 I guided on a big spring creek in northern California and there were big spring fed lakes around us. The frogs were huge and tasted great because they lived in gin clear water. No limit and you could fill a gunny sack in 3 hours with two guys. I miss eating them.

While fishing I saw a big frog eat a smaller frog. I had a rubber weedless frog fishing lure. I would just cast it in front of a frog and they would try to eat the lure. My line broke trying to land a big one and I lost the lure. Something like this: Click here The video shows them catching a frog.

I caught them that way with just a piece of orange ribbon as bait.

When I was a kid we speared frogs at every opportunity. Bullfrogs being the main quarry, but Green Frogs and big Leopard Frogs were fair game. We'd clean them and my mother would fry them up. Then, in the summer of 69, while visiting an uncle in northern Wisconsin, I hand caught the biggest Bullfrog I'd laid eyes on. I immediately decided to spare it's life and made a pet out of it. We were in the process of moving to a small lake in central Michigan at the time, and I ended up turning the pet frog loose there. The lake was loaded with Bullfrogs and I continued my frog leg gathering. That Wisconsin frog had a distinct spot on his/her back, and I would always make sure my target didn't have that. Fast forward a couple years and I was spearing a mess to fry up. You guessed it....I accidentally speared that Wisconsin Bullfrog. It literally sickened me and I felt like (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman). That was, if memory serves me, the last Bullfrog I ever speared. I still ate frog legs, but I used a fishing rod and dangle a hook in their face. It bothers me yet today when I think about killing that frog.

Interesting. One day in OK I caught a huge one. I took it home and showed it to a few people and then released it.

Butch, I used to feesh for them all the time. A purple rubber worm, hooked texas style has fed me many meals of legs! Ya get a bonus bass every once in awhile too! Hooked up like that, you can work it back in under bushes and places you wouldn't dare try to dangle a hook. Plus, it's a hoot watching a frog use his front legs to stuff a big rubber worm in it's mouth. If the hook don't set, they will usually take it over and over till you hook them!

Gigging is awesome but have you ever caught a mess of them on a red roostertail?

Growing up in the swamps of southern Georgia its surprising to hear of states with bag limits on bullfrogs.

I guess I need to read up on the rules here.
I generally practice 'sack limit'. Once the sack is full, I go home. Sooner if I run out of beer.
