I have some friends that seem to rely on me to help them out with answers, whenever they have a critter problem, large or small. They were city folks that moved onto 25 acre piece of property, with a pond, large house, nice yard with woods 3/4 of the way around it.
Just walking across the 4 or 5 inch high lawn yesterday, the man got 3 ticks on him. His wife called and wondered what they could get to treat the lawn for the creepy critters. She said in the 20 years they have lived there, they have never seen more than a couple of ticks, unless they were up in the woods.
Since I no longer live or spend that much time out running through the fields and woods in the summer or deal this, can any of you ladies or gentlemen suggest a good product that might work. An how often would they need to apply it?
Thank you,
Garry-

Do they want to treat the whole yard or just their hiking clothes?
Personally, I'd rather mow the yard than subject myself to chemicals.

Permethrin
Apply about once a month more if it's really rainy. This works. Spray clothes, dog and areas of high travel. Cut the grass shorter.

They do mow the yard... has already been mowed once this year and that is what he was getting ready to do yesterday. Just walking across the yard he got the ticks on him. We have had a bunch of rain this year and it is supposed to rain the next 5 days. I mowed mine yard a week ago and had to mow it again this week and it was over 4 inches the second mowing in one week.
Not wanting to treat clothes, but to treat the yard. They are higher on the social line than I am, and they hold quite a few outdoor functions in the summer. Of course if they don't treat for ticks, at some functions... it would ticks feeding on other ticks. If you know what I mean.

Apply about once a month more if it's really rainy. This works. Spray clothes, dog and areas of high travel. Cut the grass shorter. Spray the lawn with permethrin. As previously stated, it can also be used to treat clothes and dogs. It is toxic if applied to cats.

This is based on ANTI propaganda. This myth comes from a study that applied ticks to several species in a lab then extrapolated the groomed off numbers by an unrealistic multiplier. The concept of possums as "tick vacuums" is not true. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2825780/6 species afflicted with 100 ticks each. It's a study based on grooming behaviors. Government waste, useless grants and fake science all rolled into one. Mice in particular are important in the life cycle of ticks. One tactic for reducing ticks in a given area is to put out cotton balls treated with permethrin. The mice use it to line their nests, killing the ticks that would feed on the young. Opossums are known to spread Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM) disease to horses. Infection causes loss of muscle function and weakness. They do not get a free pass around here.

I'm in full favor of guinea hens. I have 2 guinea roosters. Wanting a few hens ( 5 or 6). Anyone got a few extras. These rooster guineas have been running together for 2 or 3 years. Haven't seen them carrying any rainbow flags across the yard.
