Well, I need to set up this story and then get to the punchline.

1 yr ago, DOT back into my box & post that stood for 20 years. Had to call main office to get a replacement.

Shortly thereafter, mail lady gave it whack coming in too hot with her mirror. No biggie, a little hammer work and all is well

2 months later, some kids destroyed it in a mail box bashing spree. Replaced with a new one.

3 months later, the mail lady hit it again, again some cosmetic work required

4 days ago, someone destroyed it (hit and run). Had no idea who did it.

2 days ago, young man showed up at the my door explaining his wife took out my mailbox with her van. Seems she was dealing with a child while driving and not paying attention and whacked my mailbox.

So, Today, the young man came by to say is going to replace it for me. Well he did more then that, built a custom and very nice mailbox with 6x6's with an extended arm from across the ditch. So if anyone else hits it, they will be off in the ditch or worst. Needless to say, I 'm impressed and very grateful for this young man stepping up and doing the right thing. Sarge

Cool to hear folks doing the right thing.

3-4 years ago my mail box at the farm got taken out. I had no idea who did it, nor did any of the neighbors. A few months later I received a note apologizing for hitting my mailbox and that he/she had learned their lesson. There was also a 100 dollar bill for replacement costs.

Still have no idea who it was, but figure they either felt guilty, or got caught.

Several years ago I left for work in the AM and my mailbox was on the ground in pieces. Seems some local teens were practicing their McGyver bombs to attack some enemy in town. A few years later the box and post were scattered in pieces a half block down the road. Seems a local teen broke up with his girlfriend and was driving over 100 mph on our country road when he lost control of his car. If he hadn't hit the box his car would have rolled and probably killed him. He was caught when the police followed the oil trail from a punctured oil pan to his car. In both cases I was paid extra and had my mailboxes replaced.

I think I told this story here before but...

We had kids busting mail boxes in the middle of the night. My Dad decided to build his own out of 3/8" steel plate on a 4x4 steel post set in concrete. Never had his mailbox messed with again.

Years later, he hears a crash in the middle of the night, gets dressed quickly, and goes outside to investigate. There is a drunk guy standing in the road a little confused about why his truck came apart like it did from just hitting a mailbox. Truck parts scattered everywhere. Cops come, drunk arrested, truck towed.

The next day my dad straighten up the mailbox with the front end loader.

Friend in eastern Colorado was getting his mail box shot up and was tired of replacing it every year. His son-in-law fixed the problem. Made one made out of railroad rails welded to an eight foot piece of train track with 3/8 steel door. Buried it six foot deep with the top of the hole with four foot of concrete. Found a couple marks on it where someone had shot at it. Must have had a ricochet as it never happened again. Couple years later, a snow plow ran into it but didn't do any damage, other then stopping the plow in it's tracks. Plow driver paid more attention to where the road was after that. That mail box was put in more than 35 years ago and I believe it is still there.

Good to hear.

I got myself a seniors' GPS.
Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination,

Easy to speculate how he was raised and what kind of character his father was.

Can't do that here. Had that happened here, you would be liable for damages. Mailboxes are supposed to be made to give or break away if hit. Had the kids been caught they could be charged with a felony.

Nice to find people with that kind of integrity. They do still exist.

I think if the box is on your land maybe you can bomb proof it so to speak. If it's on the road right of away and you armor up. Then you put a hazard on right away?? Kind how was explained to me. Was a guy near here put his box on basically a bolder after more than one car took it out. Was told couldn't do that. So he moved the bolder back to the property line. Cars still take box off but don't end up in his yard just against bolder.

I just had a mail box experience the other day. Was on my fur route and overshot where I needed to turn. Driving a 26 ft box truck, and wasn't too many driveways to pick from to turn around. So pulled into one, backed out carefully, and left. Hadn't got very far when a guy came up fast and followed me. When I stopped, he was madder than all get out. Told me that I'd pushed over his mailbox. I said, what can I do to make you happy. He wouldn't say, so I gave him two choices. Said I will come and put his box back up, but he would have to supply the tools, or I could pay him to do it. He chose the latter, and I couldn't get him to say how much! He finially said thirty bucks, I paid him and told him I was sorry. I can't imagine getting that upset over a mailbox!

The way it was explained to me was that even though you bought the mailbox, it belongs to the US postal service. Since the US postal service is federal, any damage to their property is considered a felony. Never heard of anyone being charged but if someone where to run into your mailbox post and was hurt or worse, that's when the real trouble would begin for you. Anyway, it's still cheaper to replace it than it is to hire an attorney to get you out of trouble.
