So, I'm working on a fur shed (some of you may have heard about this already. My original plan was to use a dirt floor woodshed, then it turned to the basement, then it turned into using both. But I think my Dad and I have decided to use a section of one of our bigger barns. To give you perspective it's a good sized barn, but on the end is a add-on, so on this inside of this add-on one of the sides is shingled (this would be the end of the main barn). I'm thinking about using feed bags as insulation (lots of 'em) and then use poly tarp for the vapour barrier. What I'm wondering is: after the insulation, and the vapour barrier, should I buy a bunch of drywall and put it up? Or should I use something else, because I'd like a cheaper alternative, my Dad and I went and measured it and it's gonna need around 106 4x8 sheets of drywall which to put in perspective is about $1600 dollars CAD. Do you have any ideas for an alternative to the drywall? All comments, suggestions, or ideas are welcome and HIGHLY appreciated! Thanks!

Use metal roofing. I believe it's about the cheapest thing you can find to cover a wall.

OSB. Can paint or leave bare depends on what you want to do.

Wish I had more time to trap....

know of any old dilapidated buildings in your area? offer to tear it down for the lumber. will be a lot of labor but its cheap building materials. imo you dont want a vapor barrier. drying pelts is pretty humid. better if it can breathe a little. unless you can get hold of a dehumidifier

I would go with OSB instead of metal panels as its then easier to screw shelves to the walls for all the stuff that goes with trapping

Let's go Brandon

Can you make a small room and screw the walls together and use OSB. Make the walls in panels so they can be removed and stacked flat when not needed for trapping and fur put up. OSB both sides of the wall and ceiling. Probably make the whole thing for a quarter of the costs.

Wow 106 sheets of 4x 8 is 3339 square foot. If you have 10 foot wall height that is still 330 plus running foot of wall or roughly 4 80 foot walls, unless my math is way off. To me that is far larger than needed or wanted unless you have many other multiple uses for the space. Also if you are going to use low cost things like burlap feed sacks etc for insulation why not find the cheapest type panel board you can find. Dry wall board may be lower cost but weighs about 4 times as much as some of the cheap panel boarding. Also that is a lot to heat and if you don't insulate the ceiling you will lose most of the heat up there.

If this is a big open room I’d divide it off with a 2x wall according to the space you think you need. Insulate it and cover only the walls you think you need for shelves and such...this will get you by until you have more funds to finish it. From my short time trapping I’ve realized I don’t need a lot of room for work and fur storage, in fact my traps that I don’t regularly use take up more space than anything.

Thanks guys!!!! I think I've decided to section off a small area big enough to keep furs to dry and insulate it with feed bags. And to cover I'll buy some drywall. I will only need 10 sheets of 4x8 which will be enough to cover 4 sides and the ceiling of this sectioned off box (i'll heat the room with a space heater or something). Then an hour or so before I come in and skin or whatever I'll turn on another heater and keep it on just while I'm in there. Sounds good?
