I use dbl width 2x10 & alternate each set 90 degrees. Seen a set of jackstands on an angle 1 time at a fire call,not pretty. never used jackstands again. takes extra time with wood but no worries and no tipping. As a firefighter , you are familiar with 'cribbing' using wooden blocks to stabilize a wrecked car on it's side to stabilize it along with other items to keep it falling while accessing it during a rescue operation. Common using during construction and other trades too. I have a collection of cribbing material like 12"X12" , 8"X8" and 4"x4" for stabilizing large objects like cars. Bit of a science to use them properly and safely like crossing directions to ensure maximum stability. I use them here and there to support cars and other objects with jack stands and hydraulic jacks . After seeing first hand a misplaced jackstand EMS call and guys legs crushed more or less I will use the crisscrossed 2x10's everytime.I even have a pc of rope stapled to some to make carrying a bunch easier.

Boys when it comes to sticking your mellon underneath something heavy, bigger is better. 2- 3 ton jack stands are what I used to hold up one end of my riding mower. 2- 6 ton jack stands are what I hold up a light wt inpliment already lifted by a 3 point on a tractor like an auger or a brushhog.
If you drive and work on a full sized pickup, don't skimp. You family does not want to make the decision to leave you on or take you off life support several years after you became a vegetable.

Good post. Overkill on safety is a good thing. I tell people all the time get real , real secure when jacking up a car or other big things if you have to work under them. You are literally betting your life that the lifted that car/truck/whatever and it will not fall on you. Be SAFE take extra time/care to make absolutely no risk to you or others when under a vehicle. Having good properly used jack stands and wood cribbing to support/stabilized a car with the original floor jack left in place where you lifted it and loose tires removed from the vehicle put underneath things like axles or frame/subframe members as well as a last chance plan are all good.

I use 6 x 6's cut about two-feet long and 2 x 10's cut about a foot long. They are off-falls from various construction jobs over the years. A couple of 6 x 6's have the ends cut at 45 degree angles and are used as tire blocks. I never trust a jack or jack stand. I jack up whatever it is I'm working on, arrange the dunnage then lower the vehicle on to it.

I don't trust my hydraulics anymore than I trust jacks or jack stands. I recently put some new tires on the back hoe, lifted it with the bucket but lowered it onto dunnage before taking the front wheels off.
Eh...wot?

i get under nothing.its like putting your fingers under that 200 pound piece of stone in the quarry.everyone carries 2 chisels and there main use is in case it goes.saves fingers.they say--you'll do it once though and that is why i have a broken nail bed on my left thumb that catches on everything.havent had a urge to reach under one since.

I grow my own Jackstands right here. A hardwood stump will hold up just about anything. Ya can adjust the hight with a chainsaw. Thats how I got my 40 ton boat of the trailer in the middle of nowhere. And right now it is sitting securely on 4 big oak stumps. Dead nuts level and stable.

A friend of mine had a OE jack break on him when he was changing a tire on a Chevy Impala. I never liked the looks of them things anyway. Anytime I leave home with the camper, I have a floor jack in the back of my pickup. I ain't getting underneath nothin with todays Chinese standard jacks.

Mr Ed can you explain how you use your 2x10's? 2 side by side ,then next 2 @90 degrees and so on till I get the heigth I need. I also use 6x6 's on my truck when I want to get higher faster. No chance at slippage plus wheel chocks.
