My service dog died recently and I’m looking to replace her with a golden retriever. I don’t really know what I’m looking for or out for in this breed. I’m gonna get a puppy. I’ve bought and sold lots of dogs so I’m familiar with what to look for in general, I’m just not sure if there’s anything breed specific. Also if anyone knows good lines I’d appreciate that advice as well. Want to hunt it as well as being a service dog

Not too easy to find good hunting lines but there are still some around.

Good luck.

Find a breeder whose dogs have the traits that you are looking for.I would want to visit that person and see those dogs.Remember the dam is just as important as the site when getting a puppy.

I will look tonight and see if I can find a number for a breeder that breeds specifically to the hunting side. They became so popular for show dogs that the hunt has been bred out of a lot of lines. I grew up with the breed. They are very good and very loyal dogs. If you have a family with younger children they bond very tightly to the family group. That being said they can be very protective of the family group especially the young kids. Goldens are the #1 dog on the bite list. You have nothing to worry about with you family but with people outside the family unit. Most of these are just little nips and harmless. When we were kids if the neighborhood kid were in the yard and we were playing some rough and tumble game this is when the protective side of the dog came out. If they feel like you are being threatened they may react toward the person they see as the aggressor. This happened a few times with a few different Goldens growing up. Not one resulted in anyone getting hurt or even having the skin broken but let me tell you all the kids in the neighborhood had a great respect for everyone when they were over at our place.

Flip side of that is that they are also a very gentle dog and very eager to please. Just like any dog you can get a rock head but most are very intelligent and have a great nose. So I would think that having one as a duel purpose dog would be very easy for this breed. If you look for the right one you will not be disspointed.

If you can get 2. Our last ones lasted 14 and 16 years. Our current Goldens are 8 YO. Easy to train for bird hunting and make an awesome service dog.
There are several breeders here in Alaska if you find difficulty locating breeders. PM me if you need help.

Golden Retrievers in my opinion are the easiest dog to train to retrieve, it comes natural to them.

Great dogs, our first one lived to she was 14 . My wife bought me one last year for my birthday great dog I use him for duck hunting and dove hunting. He can be a little hard headed every once in a while but nothing a ecollar doesn’t straighten out. When we was looking for one I found some in west Tennessee the guy that had them was a duck hunter. When ended up finding one from a Veterinarian that had pups on the Alabama state line .This is a picture from his first dove hunt if you notice he was still on a check cord.[Linked Image]

I’ve had a couple of Goldens. They have awesome personalities. Best dogs I ever owned. They have been too highly inbreed though in my opinion. Some physical faults to look out for are tendency for hip dysplasia and also poor ear drainage leading to ear infections. They also shed like crazy in the spring/summer.

I've never owned one, but know people who have. They are good dogs from what I saw. Great family dogs, good hunters, gentle dogs, and smart. If they have a draw back it might be they do get tangled up with burrs when hunting. Get a good dog brush for after hunting.

I’ve had multiple Golden’s since I was a little kid. They are great dogs. Every one is different though. I’ve noticed the darker the color the more hunting instinct they have, although I’m sure most of them could be great hunting dogs with some training. The one that I had all through high school, Henry, treed bears, caught and ate whole trout, and carried his own backpack hundreds of miles. The other one that really stands out, Brandy, had three legs (got hit by a tuck) but could sniff out any duck. She brought back ducks to us we didn’t even shoot. In tact males and females can be somewhat confrontational unless socialized with many other dogs. Great with people and kids and very smart and easy to train. 9.5/10 Lol

Labs are more popular around here for hunting because goldens are a burr magnet with the long hair.

I think they're the best dog out there. Smart, eager to please, and friendly. I hunt with mine and brushing out the coat can be......is a pita

Our first Golden was a rescue dog. She was a natural grouse getter. She would set next to me when hunting birds on the buds and look up and would spot them and could find them even when not shot. Many times would bring back live birds. She earned the couch until she left us at just over 16. Never did loose the eye or the scent of grouse!
Being a rescue dog she had bad hips, stomach problems but her awesome retrieving ability earned her extra care, "operations". Our last 2 dogs are 2 months apart females. I did not run them for the first 6 months after hearing that will protect their hips and it has and feed quality food no vet bills or ear problems.
Good luck finding your best friend. Beats the heck out of most humans!!!

I once had what was listed as a Golden Retriever but was really half Lab Retriever. He was loving and highly intelligent but was hyper to the inth degree. I suspect he would have become a super stock dog if give the opportunity.

My son happens to have a Golden retriever litter he's selling pups from right now. Good lines. $1k each. Pups are about three weeks old, so not ready to leave mom yet. He has four or five left, last I heard.

Ok so here’s what I ended up with for anyone interested. I found lots of people breeding great field bred dogs. I don’t hunt enough to justify the $2000ish they cost. If you can afford it I don’t doubt their dogs are worth it, but what o found were all seriously high end dogs.
The more useful information was figuring out the difference in build between the field bred and pet dogs. So I shopped around and found people who had dogs I liked the look of, who weren’t breeding for a particular purpose and maybe hunt the parents. I’ll post pics of the little girl I got when I pick her up mid July. She’ll be my service dog and hunting dog, as best as I can train her for both.
