I got tired of losing fishing lures when they get stuck on stuff under the water (and sometimes in trees over the water). I normally use 8lb monofilament on a spinning reel. I just put 30lb braid on the reel for the first time. I figure that if I can pull with 30# of force instead of just 8, I'll be more likely to get my lure back.

Went fishing this afternoon and got to try braided line for the first time. I did get back my lure every time it snagged so that part was a success. I had to wrap the line around my plier handles to stop it from cutting into my skin - the braided like is definitely strong.

But, I lost 30 feet or more on my casting distance. If I look at the 30 lb braided line side by side with the 8 lb mono, they look like they are the same diameter. The braided is much more flexible and I can tell that it's more slippery so I figured it would cast farther - not so.

Any tips for getting my casting distance back?

go to 15 lb braid better distance or better yet get you a plug knocker and keep using your mono

This has saved me hundreds over last 10 years.

use it awhile, the die is pretty sticky, once broken in it will be ok if you have quality braid.

I think that stuff absorbs water, so your casting a heavier by weight line. but from 8 to 30? I'd go with 15 and split the difference, and stop catching trees....lol

Just a thought. If one is using that heavy of a line, does one have to go with a lighter section that ties to the hook? I do not remember all the technical lingo. I have fly fished and spin fished since the mid to late 60s.

In fly fishing, which I have dine more of, one commonly uses a leader to get the offering a ways from the heavy fly line. On top of that, most fly fisherman also extend the life of the leader and to offer a less visible connection to you your offering, by using a light wealth tippet. Commonly many use fluorocarbon.
I have no idea what you are fishing for but 30 lbs. braided line may find some refusals. Just a thought.

I always use a floro leader on my braid. Reason I use braid is for better casting distance and not line twist. 15 lb spiderwire and then the leader. Cast it a mile. Key is don't fill the spool too full

Here is a trick to use with braided line when you get snagged. Open your bale and let enough line out that you can hold your pole straight up and have your line come straight down to your reel. Hold your extra line along with your pole in the same hand. Close your bale. Now grab your line with your free hand and pull it back like you are pulling a bow string. Release it like a bow string. Keep tension on your line and pole and continue to pull and snap the line with your free hand. It usually doesn't take too many attempts to free your lure. It is much easier to show it than explain it. Hope this makes sense. Rarely do I lose anything since I was shown this trick.

If you're throwing a lure with 30# braid I'd guess you're not catching much. In my experience fish have good eyesight and they can see 30# braid and know something ain't right.
My go-to lures are 1/8 oz and I use 6# clear Trilene XL mono with a good drag system. Different parts of the country require different methods.
30# braid may work well for catfish in the Missouri River.

Why I use 4 lb test for everything.. trout, panfish...rubber baits for bass.. Do pretty good, just avoid the trees and like above get the desnagmagthing to get your lure back.

I've never seen one of these knocker plugs before. Seems like it would work from a boat where you can get over the lure and drop the knocker down to hit the lure. If I'm on shore with my lure stuck 50' from the shore, I can lift my rod tip and might get this to slide to the lure - will it still work? Never tried one but I'm probably going to make one and try it out. In fact, I'm thinking about adding a loop or two of wire, or small steel cable to make it tangle up with the lure.

I use Power Pro on my reels and can cast a country mile and fish could care less if they’re caught with braid or mono. Never had an issue in fresh or salt water. The only issue with braid is it has to be put on TIGHT! I use a wet towel to hold the braid and reel it on or have someone reel it on. If it’s not tight it slips and will cause a lot of wind knots. If you have a bait shop that can fill up your spools, then that’s the best option. I promise they can get it tight.

Oh yeah, the “bow trick” works on braid. Very rarely lose a lure.

I use 30# braided on Erie all the time with my dipsys I run mono off of them at about a 3 foot lead. Works great and you can anchor a boat with the stuff.

I BELIEVE IN MY GOD, MY COUNTRY AND IN MYSELF.

If you're using that heavy a line, whether braided or mono, be careful. If you try to yank out a snag or hook a big fish, you could break your rod. The line ratings on the rod are not mere advice.

If you’re using your rod to remove a snag you need to quit fishing.
If you hook big fish and don’t know how to set your drag you need to quit fishing.

I see other fishermen yanking on snags with their rods all the time. I've done it myself, carefully, to get a different angle.

If you set your drag by the line weight, not the rod capacity, the rod may break.

If you use a leader of no higher line rating than the rod's, the rod should be safe.

Buy quality fishing gear and you don’t have those issues. Been fishing most of my life and I’ve never broke a rod yet with mono or braid. Most newer rods even have a rating for braid now. My Curado even says Power Pro rating, lol.

I've never seen a rod with separate, heavier line ratings for braid. It makes no sense to do so.
