I've been doing this for years, never heard of anyone else doing it so thought I'd post some
pics.

Its a shame to leave all my weasel boxes in the barn in Spring, when they are eagerly used
by bluebirds, chickadees and wrens around my place.

The bird smell might make them better weasel boxes too. Good idea!

So of the old days when 2Poor was around on the weasel threads I was putting the idea out there. Been doing it for 20+ years. The plug that you drill out goes into that end hole and replaces the side entrance in the winter/ summer. It is always nice to have some depth to the hole as the kids grow up and get feed from the parents. As well the depth helps with the second nest attempt as they build up their nest. There is a bot fly that feeds on the second brood that is left over from the first batch which can be devastating on the feet of the young as the larvae feed.

I figured I wasnt the first, I had just never heard of anyone doing it.

In the beginning I was putting a false wall inside, to shorten the
interior length. But that didnt seem to increase attractiveness or
brood success.

If birds were that picky about nest cavities they would have gone
extinct, long before man invented the ruler, saw and hammer.

My boxes are used right around my property so I keep an eye on
them and clean out the nest materials after the first brood.

You can spray some bleach solution in there too, to disinfect and
kill parasites.

They must be attracted to the dead weasel musk smell.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.
