U.P. man charged with killing 3 bald eagles, 18 wolves & other animals

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (AP) — An Upper Peninsula man is accused of illegally killing wolves, eagles and other animals after a months long investigation.

Kurt Duncan of Pickford is facing 125 wildlife misdemeanor charges in Chippewa County, the Department of Natural Resources said. He pleaded not guilty Wednesday in 91st District Court.

Duncan, 56, is accused of killing 18 wolves over an 18-month period and killing three bald eagles. Both are protected under state and federal laws.

The allegations also include deer, turkey, bear and bobcat.

"Duncan was using the animals for a variety of reasons, including crafts, selling or disposing of them, and stated that he was catching the animals because he could and 'likes to do it,'" the DNR said.

It wasn't known if Duncan had a lawyer who could comment. He faces up to 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine for each wolf killed, along with other possible penalties, the state said.

Charges against other people are expected, the DNR said.

Yah, he was known as a wild bugger around this area. It was only a matter of time before they made a case against him. He well deserved what ever they give him!

How did he kill so many wolves? Trapping? Hunting? How much time would a UP person have to spend outdoors to see 18 wolves over an 18 month period? Guy must be quite the hunter and trapper!

I wasn't put here to judge that man but I will always wonder how many federal mandates save wolves and raptors at the expense of elk, deer, and small game in open ground.

I am NOT saying this mans deeds were justified. I am just saying the local biologist are in a better position to make wildlife management decisions than any representative in DC who is pandering to the lobbyists that have made him a daggum millionaire

Minnesota has the largest wolf population in the lower 48. They are also considered the Golden Calf by our liberal population and so many law makers.
While other states can and will be able to take some wolves--the state with so many cannot.

Pretty good numbers for an endangered species. Not condoning what he did, just saying pretty good numbers and one heck of a woodsman. Then again a lot of poachers are good woodsmen.

Doesn't take much of a "woodsman" to run a semi-auto with night vision optics over a large bait pile, at least thats the thinking around these parts of the country!

Yes,it's easy to kill a lot of stuff when you aren't constrained by the laws and morals that the rest of us live by.

I've only been in the UP for a few hours driving to an FHA drop off spot. And I saw a wolf get hit on the highway right in front of me. Big cream colored female, she had to be pushing 100 lbs.

My fear of moving stairs is escalating!
