Might be a long shot here, but one of the animals I've never had the opportunity to hunt is southern hogs. I've always wanted to, as they seem like they'd be a kick in the pants. So seeing as how I don't like asking for spots to hunt, even when traveling to a new state, I came up with an idea. Figure one of you southern bird hunters has always wanted to chase chukar, huns, blue grouse, turkey or valley quail in Idaho. I would trade a trip, non-guided, just as hunting buddies. You come to Idaho and hunt birds and I come to hunt hogs in the south with you. I have a GSP and a rookie English setter. Where I live is mostly waterfowl, grouse and turkey. By turkey I mean lots of turkey and good amounts of grouse. A 4 hours south of me and we are into some prime chukar, hun and valley quail country.

What I'm looking for in a southern hog hunt isn't on a giant fenced in property. Would like to hunt them on public land or at least private land where they just happen to frequent and aren't drawn in by any sort of bait, other than maybe the crops that are around.

Shoot me a PM if you're interested and we can talk about logistics. Thanks for looking. Adding some bird hunting pics now.

There were plenty of Javelina in eastern Cochise County Arizona's Coronado National Forest when I trapped there in the 1880's, mostly on the Riggs Ranch which was partly on forest land. If considering that area check AZ hunting laws.

Thanks guys. Rowdy is a good boy and a dang good bird dog. Furvor, appreciate the tip. I haven't ruled out a javelina hunt. I do love the country down in AZ. Really neat down there.

Wanna Be, it's a merriam's

to really have a decent chance at hogs here in texas you have to bait them or hunt them with dogs as a nuisance ! you could go hunt them in fields with thermals also

Our hogs are about the same way on private land. We may have them for a month or two then gone a month or two. Once they start showing up again, we’ll bait them up and trap them or shoot them.

Our WMA’s have hogs but can only hunt them at certain times. They can be hunted during any season, but only with firearms allowed during that season. IE...turkey season either shotguns or archery, etc...the only time we can use centerfire rifles is during deer quota hunts or you can use the excuse of hunting bobcats during the late small game season. They’ll have a few hog hunts during the summer months, just wear snake boots and watch out for the gators.

The night hunting with thermals is something that I could get on board with. Been looking into that a little bit as well.
