I worked in Iowa 4 years ago, and these annoying things were everywhere. Now they are in our area, and I have developed an alergic reaction to the bites. Do any of you have issues with the bites from these lil buggers?

Same with me. Over the years, no bug bites bothered me, other than a bit of itching. Now it is a different story. I am ordering some spray, called Bug Soother, which is what worked best for us, while working in Iowa.

They are thick at our deer camp in west central Illinois during the summer. The best repellant that the locals told us about smells a lot like vanilla. The name escapes me but it works great on those buffalo gnats.

Michagander, I think you have it backwards. It's the Illinois residents that go to Michigan for the summer.

They end being like a chigger bite for me. I seen a lady at the ER a few years ago that had gotten bit quite a few time on her thigh. Leg was a angry red and really swelled up. They sell buggins here that doesn't do to bad but what I like better is absorbine jr Plus has to be the plus version regular wont work. J

They seem to breed in running water. Where I used to live there was a problem on the golf course along the crick. The city manager ended up getting a chemical to put in the crick upstream that would kill the critters before/when they hatched on rocks in the crick. Didn't take much but did the job.
Life ain't supposed to be easy.

I saw on a special the other day about eagles where black fly bites caused two fledgling eagles to jump out of their nest before they knew how to fly. Must be pretty nasty.
My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

Well, after two days of Prednisone, the swelling is going down, but the itching is about to drive me crazy. These flies are a pain in the eye! Lol

I live in the blackfly capital of the world. You get immune to them after a while.
Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

Yep. You build up immunity to their bites, just as for mosquitos. At least most people do. The swelling and itching is due to an allergic reaction.
We have our share of black flies in Alaska.
